HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-01-2022 Fairhope Public Schools Commission Meeting MinutesFairhope Public School Commission June 1, 2022 Fairhope High School Members present: Robin Coleman, Amy Foley, Joe Kelley, Hill Robinson, Miranda Schrubbe, Cornelius Woods Members Absent: Paul Hannon, Danielle Mashburn-Myrick, Carrie McLemore (all excused) Principals present: Julie Pierce & Sydney Smith - Fairhope West Elementary; Carol Broughton - Fairhope East Elementary; Lynn Smith – J. Larry Newton Elementary; Angie Hall – Fairhope Middle; Jon Cardwell – Fairhope High City of Fairhope: Corey Martin Guests: Gary Gover, Carrie Mackey Jon Cardwell welcomed commission members and guests to Fairhope High, and shared that the enhanced funding for FHS has had an impact on such things as the graduation rate and scholarship offers. Three recent graduates received service academy appointments! Amy Foley called the meeting to order and minutes from the May meeting were approved. Funding request for Fairhope Middle was presented by Angie Hall. All items were approved, to be funded with 3-mill monies. Carryover funding is to be used to cover the amounts over $400,000. See detail below; full request is attached. Fairhope Middle 2 Intervention Teachers - Math $130,000 2 Intervention Teachers - Language Arts $130,000 4 Instructional Aides $140,000 Professional Development $20,000 Crisis Alert $1,000 Writing Coach $25,000 Academic Opportunity Teacher $25,000 Total Requested/Approved $471,000 Julie Pierce presented additional funding requests for Fairhope West Elementary. All items were approved, to be funded with 3-mill monies. See detail below; full request is attached. Fairhope West Elementary Instructional Materials $15,000 Professional Development $27,000 Total Requested/Approved $42,000 Following up on discussion at the May meeting regarding the need for annual progress measures to show the impact of the 3-mill funding, Amy Foley reported that she met with Renee Carter, Dean of Academics for BCBE, and her team. Ms. Carter will be pulling together data and sharing with the Fairhope principals. The principals will review the information and help commission members determine which measures will be useful and how to compile those to show progress (or lack of progress) related to the funding. Development of this “report card” will be discussed further at the August meeting. There was discussion of the problems faced by students outside of the school setting that affect long- term success, and various approaches to addressing them. In an effort to engage parents and others in the community, the commission will consider partnering with the principals to host an open house event where attendees can learn more about what is going on in the schools and what is being accomplished with the enhanced funding. Meeting was adjourned at 5:50. Next meeting will be on August 3rd at 4:30 at Fairhope West Elementary. Professional Development $27,000 Professional learning teams to develop content instructional plans in to improve student academic performance. ISTE, a technology conference, and CLAS, administrator conference, keep school leaders informed regarding effective instructional strategies. Peer walkthrough teams observe and adjust instructional plans based on observations instruction. Response to Intervention meetings to develop intervention plans.
