HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-15-2010 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, September 15 , 2010 , at 5:15 p.m.
at the Recreation Center located at 803 North Greeno Road.
Present were: Chairman Vann Saltz, Sherry Sullivan, Jenny Douglass , Derek Thomas, Hank
Mullins, Michelle Smith, and Erik Cortinas. City Administrative Assistant Pandora Heathcoe
took the minutes to the meeting. Mike Odom, Gulf Coast Newspapers was also present.
Absentee were: Liz Chandler, John Baker, Tom Kuhl , City Council Member Mike Ford and
Brittany Hoover.
Chairman Vann Saltz called the meeting to order. The minutes from the meeting on Wednesday ,
August 18, 2010 were reviewed and approved by 1st motion by Derek Thomas and 2 nd motioned
by Erik Cortinas and unanimously carried.
Vann Saltz-Reported that Tom Kuhl is out sick, however Tom has given Vann a few items to
be read as updates . Vann also began the meeting discussing the changes the City
Council made to the pool fees , the golf fees , and the resolution passed at the last
City Council meeting.
Stadium -Reading from Tom Kuhl 's report , Vann reported that the repairs to the stadium
bleachers is complete. The final inspection was performed by Volkert on August
24 , 2010 with Tom Kuhl present. The work is deemed to be satisfactory by
everyone and there have been two home football games held so far without any
problems .
Youth-
Football
The building at the Barnwell field is not complete however it was useable for the
Youth Football "Pride Night" held on September 2, 2010. There were 1,500
tickets initially sold however vo lunteers reported they were still taking money at
the gate. There was a huge turnout with lots of fireworks and volunteers.
Young The City Council is moving forward with the "Young Lungs at Play" program.
Lungs at Play They did not rule on this at the last City Council meeting but are holding it over
for the next meeting September 27, 2010 so changes can be made to the ordinance
and it will be voted upon then.

Skateboard -Vann read an email from a teenager to the Mayor concerning the skateboard
Park Park on Volanta A venue. The requests were from the BMX bicycle riders and the
skateboarders who use the Park. They were requesting additional pips and ramps.
The Rec Board agreed that the people using this Park need to start taking care of
what they have first before requesting additional equipment. Trash and other
items are being left on the ground at the Park, and sections of the fence have been
taken down at certain times.
Rec Center-Liz Chandler was absent as was Tom Kuhl, therefore a financial report or status
report for the Rec Center was not available.
Sports
Leagues-
New Business:
Erik Cortinas reported that the opening day for the soccer league was huge. Billy
Langford is President of that league.
Fall Ball has 24 teams this year. (13 from Fairhope , also teams from Daphne and
Central Baldwin are participating also)
Hank Mullins Hank Mullins turned in his resignation from the Rec Board effective immediately.
Sherry-
Vann requested copies of the applications that were submitted to the City Council
for consideration prior to Hank's re-appointment so the Rec Board could review
them and submit their nominations to the Council for Hank's replacement.
Sherry reported that at the last Rec Board Equitable Committee meeting, Dr.
Beverly Thomas, Principal from Fairhope High School, was present to explain the
relationship between the Rec Center and the schools. Rick Kingrea, City
Councilman, explained that any fees for this year would not change, however that
did not mean they would not change next year.
The Committee did discuss sports tourism and said that softball packets were
being made up and would be mailed soon. Eddie Boyett is in charge of contacting
each of the leagues and Charlie Langham is in charge of contacting all the high
school coaches .
Rec Center -Michelle Smith brought up the possibility of the Rec Center offering corporate
membership rates and packages. She asked how it worked because she has had
several inquiries from people wanting to know if the Rec Center offered them.
She said she would get with Liz to discuss it more before the next meeting.

Erik Cortinas Reported that he was concerned that there were some people riding horses
through the skateboard park and the baseball fields last week. He was not sure
who they were or where they came from .

Plan
Since Hank Mullins resigned from the Rec Board and was the original Chairman
for this committee, Erik Cortinas became the new Chairman.
The next meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, October 20, 2010.
The meeting was duly adjourned at 6:00 p.m.
