HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-20-2010 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, October 20, 2010, at 5:15 p.m. at
the Recreation Center located at 803 North Greeno Road.
Present were: Chairman Vann Saltz, Jenny Douglass, Michelle Smith, Erik Cortinas, Liz
Chandler and Brittany Hoover. City Administrative Assistant Pandora Heathcoe took the minutes
to the meeting. Guest: John Brandon
Absentee were: Sherry Sullivan, Tom Kuhl, Councilman Mike Ford, John Baker, and Derek
Thomas.
Chairman Vann Saltz called the meeting to order. The minutes from the meeting on Wednesday,
September 15, 2010 were reviewed and approved by 1st motion by Erik Cortinas and 2nd
motioned by Michelle Smith and unanimously carried.
Vann Saltz -Introduced guest John Brandon. Mr. Brandon has a son who plays in the Youth
Football League in Barnwell. He was concerned with the foul language used by
the coaches at the field and also brought along a Code of Conduct agreement he
was required to sign to coach soccer. He thought the Youth Football might want
to use it as a guideline for the next year season. It was also recommended that the
Youth Football League create a board for the next season. Mr. Brandon also
submitted a copy of a five page letter from his wife voicing her concerns as well.
Tom Kuhl did attend several games to observe and the Board also advised Mr.
Brandon that the Youth Football League President, Jason Hall and Tyler Turner
did come to City Hall and met with Mayor Kant the previous day to discuss
var10us issues.
Stadium-Vann reported that the repairs to the stadium bleachers is complete .
Young The City Council approved the "Young Lungs at Play" program. The posters
Lungs at Play have been ordered and should arrive very soon for installation.

Skateboard -Erik Cortinas reported that he has not seen any more horse riders near the park.
Rec Center-Liz Chandler gave the financial report in Tom Kuhl's absence . Since September
2009 , the Rec Center now has 2,936 members and has reported $296 ,695.60 in
revenue. The new rates approved by the City Council began October 15l_ Those
members affected by this rate change were determined by a city map showing
who currently receives city trash pick-up.

New Business :
Bids for the new basketball court floor will be going to the architect November 8th
.
The new road off ofVolanta has been completed, however still waiting on 2-way
signs to come in for installation. This road was completed with grant money.
It was suggested that the volunteer fire fighters should receive a 25% discount on
their membership like the city employees currently do. It was suggested that this
be added to the next City Council work session. This was approved by 1st motion
by Erik Cortinas and 2nd motioned by Michelle Smith and unanimously carried.
Erik Cortinas reported that gall ball was good . The players will currently have to
play in the league that they will be playing in next year.
Fall Ball has 24 teams this year . (13 from Fairhope, also teams from Daphne and
Central Baldwin are participating also)
Vann Saltz Due to Hank Mullins submitting his resignation from the Rec Board, Vann
requested two names so the City Council could vote on his replacement. The two
names given were: 1) Bob Keyser, and 2) Kevin Grimes. This was approved by 1st
motion by Jenny Douglass and 2nd motioned by Erik Cortinas and unanimously
carried.
Rec Center -Liz Chandler brought up for possible future discussion creating a Christmas Camp
similar to one currently at the YMCA.

Plan
Brought up for discussion her idea to create a Master Swim Program and Adult
League. She felt this would create additional activity for the pool and submitted a
list of 70 names of people interested. Each swimmer would have to join the pool
or pay a daily fee. There would be an initial $35 fee to join the Master League and
these members would be covered under the league 's insurance policy. Profits
from the league would be spent on the pool for swim meets or any equipment the
pool may need. The Board felt this should be discussed further at future meetings .
Erik Cortinas requested and received a copy of the initial 5-year plan submitted to
the City Council by Tom Kuhl. He will get with Tom to discuss it further so he
can outline further discussions with the Board.
The next meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, November 17 , 2010.
The meeting was duly adjourned at 6:45 p .m.
