The Financial Advisory Committee met at 4 :45 p .m.,
City Hall, Delchamps Room, 161 North Section Street,
Fairhope, Alabama 36532 , on Monday, 23 August 2010.
Present were:
Chuck Zunk, Chairman
Members: Stan Grubin, Mac McCawley, Marvin Wilder, John Brown, and Mayor Kant.
Ex-Officio Members : Debbie Quinn, Lonnie Mi x on , Mike Ford.
Dick Kwapil and Dan Stankoski were absent.
Chuck Zunk called the meeting to order at 4:45 p .m. He announced that the first item
i s to approve the minutes from the July 26, 2010 Financial Advisory Committee meeting.
Marvin Wilder moved to approve the minutes from the July 26 , 2010 Fairhope Financial
Advisory Committee meeting . Seconded by John Brown , motion passed unanimously by
v oice vote .
The next item on the agenda was the review of cost reduction projects, as follow-up
from May 17, 2010 City Council Work Session. City Administrator Gregg Mims
discussed and highlighted the numerous co st reductions either in place or possibly being
put in place in the future , i.e. cell phones , pagers , web camera, printers , etc. Mr. Zunk
questioned an energy audit. Mr. Mims stated initially this was in the budget, but the draft
budget before you doe s not have the funding.
The next item on the agenda was the Alabama Power Tree Grant. Jennifer Fidler
explained the $2 ,000 grant that the City could apply which is reimbursed 100 % by
Alabama Power. The grant is specifically for purchasing trees which need to be replaced
on De La Mare and Fairhope A venue . Ms . Fidler mentioned that Stacy McKean has
offered to help write the grant. Debbie Quinn moved to go forward . Seconded by Mac
McCawley, motion pass ed unanimously by voice v ote.
Lonnie Mixon mo v ed to adjourn the meeting . Seconded by John Brown, motion
passed unanimously by v oice vote.

The Tree Committee and I would like to apply for an Alabama
Power Tree Grant. Ms . Stacy McKean has offered to write the grant free
of charge .
Could you place this request on the City Council agenda for a
Resolution? We would like to plant new 'Bosque ' Chinese Elm on Del la
Mare Avenue .

Trees add beaury to any la ndscape, but they add eve n m ore to the qualiry of life than meets the eye. In an effort
to foster public awareness about the benefits of a productive urban forest, the Alabama Power Foundation and
the Alabama Urban Forestry Association (AUFA) are pl eased to announce the Foundation wi ll again provide
grants up to $2,000 eac h for tree planting through the "Plant A Tree in Alabama -Community Forestry
Project".
In addition, we are glad to announce the Foundation wi ll award "Gateway" grants up to $4,000 to
communities across the state co develop and/or en ha n ce the gateway to their com muni ry.

Community Forestry Project grants will b e b ase d on the environmental benefits of the proposed project,
supp ort of local communi ry leaders and volunteers, as we ll as needs of the lo cal area (see enclosed app li cat ion for
details).
Gateway grants provide funds to buy trees, mulch , la ndscape timbe r, shrubs, signage, excavat in g and
development of flow er bed s (not the planting of an nual s) for the entrance to the ciry. See app li cation for details.
Please note chat yo u m ay apply for both the Community Forestry and Gateway grants, but yo u can only be
awarded one grant.
Applications must be postmarked on or b efore A ugust 31, 2010. Winners will be announced no later than
October 28, 20 10.

2010 Community Forestry Project
INTRODUCTION
The Alabama Power Foundation and the Alabama Urban Forestry Association are pleased to announce the "Plant a Tree in
Alabama" grant program. As part of the 2010 Communiry Forestry Project, the foundation will supply funds for tree planting
in cities, towns and communities in the state. These funds are available through competitive grant proposals from eligible
groups.
PROGRAM GOA L
The goal of this program is to provide funding to plant trees in urban areas across the state.
PROGRAM OBJECTIV ES
Ht Maintain the excellent quality of life currently enjoyed in Alabama.
Ht Pursue opportunities to enhance the quality of the environment.
Ht Encourage active community involvement in the management and protection of their natural resources.
ELIGIBLE GROUPS .
Ht Local governments -cities, towns, communities.
Ht Educational institutions -city and county school systems, private schools, universities.
Ht Any 501 (c)(3) organization. The I RS letter of dete rmin ation must be submitted with the application to be considered
for the grant.
Awards are paid to the organization and not to individuals. Organizations receiving the grants must have a tax-exempt status
under the Internal Revenue Service Code and must not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, gender, nationality, or
ethnic origin.
FUNDING LIMITATIO N
Funding will be awarded based on the environmental benefits of the proposed project, financial plan, support of local
community leaders and volunteers and the needs of the applicant's local area. Grants will be awarded up to $2,000.
