Thank you for agreeing to serve on the Chief of Police Search Committee. The first meeting is
February 3, 2009 promptly at 6:00pm at the Nix Center. You have been provided with a copy of
the job description for the Chief of Police for Fairhope and several other cities. Please thoroughly
review before the meeting and be prepared to discuss any changes, additions, or deletions. I
expect to complete the job description during the February 3 rd meeting so that it can be posted
as soon as possible to accept applications.

The Chief of Police Search Committee met on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at 6:00
p.m. in the Conference Room at the ix Center located at 1 Bayo u Drive, Fairhope,
AL 36532.
Members Present: Mayor Tim Kant, Dan Stankoski, Rhonda White, Bob Callahan,
Valerie Chaney, Vann Saltz, & Rick Wilson.
Members Absent: Pam Caudill
The meeting was called to order at 6 :00 p.m. b y Dan Stankoski.
Members were asked who would like to volunteer to be the Chairman. No one
vo lunteered. Mayor Kant nominated Vann Saltz. Vann Saltz accepted.
Members first discussed which websites and newspapers would be utili zed to advertise
the position. It was agreed to advertise the position in Mobile, Montgomery, &
Huntsville newspapers. And also agreed upon to advertise on several policing websites
(Di sc over Policing.org, League of Municipalities , State Police Chief Association).
Members decided that the next meeting would be held Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at the
same time and place .
Members spoke of what qualifications they feel the next Chief of Police should have .
Rhonda White went over some job descriptions for Chief of Police from other cities and
pointed out which ones she thought were important or that should be added for our Chief
of Police job description . All members agreed that there should be a "Job Summary"
added since the current job description does not have one. Also that "Businesses" should
be added as one of the "External Contacts ".
Other areas of discussion included : Planning ; Operations Management; Staffing /
Personnel Management; Contro llin g and Reporting; Training and Development /
Professional Improvement; and Miscellaneous ; Knowledge, Skills and Abilities.
Members agreed that qualified candidates should be POST Certified or eligible to
become POST Certified. That they should ha ve experience in a supervisory position.
That they should have a Bachelor 's degree in Criminal Justice or a relat ed field, but a
Master's degree would be a plus.
All members agreed that it should be a requirement to have residence with the Corporate
limits of Fairhope within one year of appointment to the position.
Rhonda White offered to add all suggested changes to the job description and then e-mail
the updated job description to everyone so that they could discuss it further on Thursday.
At 7:20, the meeting was called to recess until Thursday, February 5, 2009 at 6:00 p.m.
