Each candidate was asked the following questions :
1. To what degree have you gotten involved in community affairs in your current or
last job?
2. You have decided on a course of action with which your superiors have directed
you to take a different course of action , with which you disagree. How would you
hand this?
3. Certain factions from within the police department feel that the new Chief should
have been promoted from within. How would you deal with this to form a strong,
cohesive organization?
4. Describe creative initiatives you have advanced (in prior positions) and the results
realized.
There was small discus sion within the search committee after each interview regarding
the responses from each candidate.
At 11 :55, after Thomas Doyle's interview had ended and before the Search Committee
recessed for lunch Dan Stankoski asked the committee members their thoughts on if the
Interim Chief (Terry Sanders) should be given an interview in addition to the top 10
candidates . He had been approached by several members of the police department who
had expressed their concern that he was no longer being considered for the position. Pam
Caudill stated that she had been approached by members of the police department also
who wanted it to be known what a fantastic job he was doing. During the discussion ,
Rhonda White spoke up and said that she feels that the derogatory statements made by
Mayor Kant at the last meeting had a direct impact on how the committee members
voted. She said that if Mayor Kant's scores were thrown out, that he would have ranked
in the top 10 . She went on to say that she has been approached by numerous members of
the police department expressing their desire that Chief Sanders receive serious
consideration or an interview for the Chief of Police position.
Bob Callahan and Rick Wilson felt that in order to protect the integrity of the process and
the committee that it should be left up to the City Council as to whether or not Chief
Sanders receives an interview. It was agreed upon by all that once the City Council has
received and read all of the minutes from the search committee meetings that they will
make a fair decision. At 12 :09 the committee recessed for lunch.
At 1 :00 p.m. the committee resumed interviews.
At 3 :25 p.m. the interview with Robert Pastula ended .
At 3:30 p.m. the committee called Michael Rowland and asked him if would consider
interviewing a little early. He agreed.
At 3 :55 p.m. the committee had finished all interviews.
At 4: 10 p .m. all committee members gave their scores to Rhonda White so that she could
determine who ranked in the Top 5.
At 4:20 p.m. Rhonda White informed the committee members that Daniel Busken, Bill
Press, Richard Moss , Curtis Vanderkooi, and William Sewell had ranked in the Top 5.
Vann Saltz made a motion to present these 5 candidates to the Fairhope City Council as
their choice for the top candidates who should receive an interview from the City
Council. Pam Caudill seconded the motion. All were in favor.
At 4:21 p.m. the Chief of Police Search Committee adjourned.
