HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-17-2011 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, August 17 , 2011 , at 5:15 p.m. at
the Recreation Center located at 803 North Greeno Road .
Present were: Jolm Baker, Bob Keyser, Michelle Smith, Derek Thomas, Tom Kuhl, Liz
Chandler, and Erik Cortinas. City Administrative Assistant Pandora Heathcoe took the minutes
to the meeting. Absentees were: Chairman Vaim Saltz, Jenny Douglass, Sherry Sullivan, and
City Councilman Mike Ford.
Guests: Fairhope Tennis Association members-John Henderson, James Bond, Barry
McKee, and Michael Kennedy.
Erik Cortina, in the absence of Chairman Vann Saltz, called the meeting to order. The minutes
from the meeting on Wednesday, July 20 , 2011 were reviewed and approved by 1st motion by
John Baker, and 2 nd motioned by Bob Keyser and unanimously carried.
Fairhope-
Tennis
Association
John Henderson spoke for the Fairhope Tennis Association (FTA) and their concerns
at the current tennis facility. The association would like see six (6) additional
courts built. This is the first year for the FT A. They recently held a tournament
back in April and had approximately 100 participants. Mr. McKee spoke about
various projects the committee has considered to raise money in order to assist in the
construction of the new courts. The FT A representatives also discussed the need for
scheduling the courts.
The Recreation Board advised the FT A to become officially sanctioned ai1d
recognized with the US Tennis Association. The Board also advised the FTA to
acquire insurance and By-Laws to establish them as a formal League to present to
the Recreation Board at a later meeting.
Tom Kuhl addressed the Recreation Board and the FTA concerning the courts and
how they are officially public courts . Tom advised the FTA that it is his
understai1ding that currently four tennis pros are teaching classes out at the facility;
however the schools also practice there. Tom stated the official usage order for the
courts would be: schools , general public, FTA, and then pros . Tom also stated the
pros would need to come to City Hall to acquire a franchise agreement in order to
charge clients for his or her services .
The FT A and the Board agreed that the FT A would work on getting their certificates
and sanctions complete and then present them again to the Board.
Tom Kuhl -Tom reported that they had a meeting at Fairhope High School with Fox Sports to
discuss the first Daphne High School versus Fairhope High School football game
being televised in October.

Tom is also in the process of contacting all the sports leagues to request copies of
their cmrent proof of insurance for him to keep on file . It was also discussed that
each league will present a set of updated financial reports for the Board to review,
possibly at the September meeting since that will be at the end of the City's fiscal
year.
Tom reported that Fairhope High School baseball is working on plans to tear
down the two-story building at the high school baseball field , make several
changes at the batting cages , construct a new dug out, and construct a new locker
room/field house facility for the varsity and JV baseball teams.
Chandler -Liz did not reported any news .
New
Business -The Youth Baseball League has applied an application to ADECA for a L WCF
grant. It has been requested from the Recreation Board to suppl y a letter
supporting this venture. A letter stating the City of Fairhope Recreation Board
suppotts Fairhope Youth Baseball's application to ADECA for a 2011 LWCF
grant was presented . This letter was reviewed and approved by 1st motion by Bob
Keyser, and 2nd motioned by Derek Thomas and unanimously carried.
There being no further business, on motion to adjourn by 1st Derek Thomas , 2 nd by Bob Keyser
and unanimously carried, the meeting was duly adjourned at 6:45 PM.
The next scheduled meeting will be held Wednesday, September 21 , 2011.
