The Fairhope Airport Board held a Special`meetkng with State and
Federal Officials on October 27, 1965 in Fairhope, Alabama,
Members Present: Dr. Mullins and Mr. Niemeyer, Mr. Lacey being absent.
Guests: Mr. Asa Roundtree, Jr., Alabama Department of Aeuronotics;
Mr. Ken Barfield, FAA, Jackson, Miss.; Mr. Bodie Strick-
land, FAA, Jackson, Miss.; Mr. George Brothers, Mobile
AAA Service; Mr. Y. C. Gullay, Alabama Department of
Aeuronotics; Mayor R. C. Macon; Mr./Sam Witznadel, Manager
Fairhope Airport; Mr. Ack Moore, City Engineer, City of Fair -
hope; Mr, George Dyson; Mr, John A. Robertson; Mr. :George
P. Wilson, Foley, Alabama; Mr. James Beck, and Mr. R. C. Yohn,
Meeting called to order by Chairman Mullins.
Minutes of previous meeting approved.
Mr. Witznadel gave a brief statistical report of growth at the
Fairhope Airport, following: In an eight month period gasoline
sales have doubled, nine planes are stored at the airport on a per-
menant basis; there are five full time employees and thirty students,
Dr. Mullins read a copy of letter written the 13th day of April, 1965,
to the State Board requesting expansion aid.
Mr. Roundtree stated that a 4100 foot runway extention was justified,
but that the State would not feel justification -in going further.
Overlay discussed: 1' inch needed to take care of all aircraft
with a eleven inch base. Mr. Moore stated that the overlay is at
present 1 3/4 inch to 2 inches in thickness,
Mr. Roundtree suggested that the City buy additional land for a
5000 foot runway for future growth, that that he is against paving
5000 feet at the present time.
Mr. Barfield suggested purchase ot fee semple land for a 900 foot ,&
xax)my which would allow enough clear zone for a 5000 foot runway.
Mr. Barfield and Mr. Macon discussed land extention (approximately
1775 X 500) feet, based on $400.00 per acre for 27 acres more or
less.
Width of runway discussed. 4100 feet of runway was agreed upon
with a 900 foot extention or a 5,000 foot purchase.
Fairhope Airport Board agreed to ask for enough land to ultimately
pave 5000 feet of runway subject to council approval,
Mr. Roundtree suggested that the Board apply for a $25,000.00
grant from the State for the extention of 4100 feet of runway.
Upon motion, duly seconded and carried, the meeting adjourned.
