Minutes of the Fairhope Airport Authority
December 18, 2012
The Fairhope Airport Authority met Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at 4 :30 p.m. in the Delchamps Room,
City Building, 161 N. Section Street.
Present: Chuck Zunk, Chairman. Members: Rod Platt, Pam Caudill, Joe McEnerney, Charlie Bassett, Jack
Burrell. Also, James Gillespie, COF Utilities Superintendent and David Bagwell, Attorney. Gayle Fogarty,
City Executive Assistant took the minutes. Howard Hadley was absent.
The minutes of the November 20, 2012 meeting were considered and approved on a motion 1st by Rod
Platt, 2nd by Jack Burrell and unanimously carried .
Appointment of Nomi natlng Committee for 2013 Officers-Chairman Zunk appointed a nomination
committee of Pam Caudill and Charlie Bassett. Officer suggestions for 2013 are to be submitted by
January 15, 2013.
Resolution to fight the ants-Chairman Zunk informed the group that ants are building nests around the
heat sinks at the airport and causing problems. Chairman Zunk requested a resolution be made to
authorize James Gillespie to take care of the ant issues at the Fairhope Airport. A motion was made 1st
by Pam Caudill and 2nd by Charlie Bassett and unanimously carried. Chairman Zunk asked James GIiiespie
to check on replacing the lights as well, as ALDOT will perform an audit of the Fairhope Airport on March
1, 2013 . James stated that the lights would be replaced by March 1, 2013.
Update on Aviation Training center-Chairman Zunk provided a recap of the memorandum of
understanding and pre-construction agreement by the Airport Authority. He added that he Is aware that
no other parties have signed the MOU and the pre-construction agreement at this time. David Bagwell,
Charlie Bassett and Chairman Zunk will discuss a draft of the Operating Lease and send to Scotty Lewis,
attorney for Baldwin County School Board. Chairman Zunk stated that the FAA is requiring so many
rules/regulations on the Airport, it was determined that the center be built on the west side . This will be
similar to a commercial development project.
Update on Facility Upgrades & Maintenance of Public Safety Hangar-James Gillespie updated the group
on the facility upgrades. He stated that Howard Hadley has someone working on a drawing for the COF
to determine what materials will be used, then James will see what the City can do or what may need to
be subcontracted out to complete. Chairman Zunk added that the invoice has been turned into the state
and they currently owe the Airport Authority $20,000. James added that the electri c is complete, as new
lights have been installed . Chairman Zunk added that he leased out two t -hangers since the last meeting
and one remains available.
Treasurer's Report-Joe McEnerney stated that there was no treasurer's report. Chairman Zunk added
that he received a letter from ALDOT and they have received and are processing the application for the
$1 .2 million for the East Side project. There was general discussion among the group regarding the East
Side project.
New Business-Charlie Bassett gave an update on the Festival of Flight. He mentioned that King Palmer
talked to Mayor Kant about the possibility of some BP funds going toward the festival of flight. Charlie
added that the event would be held the 2nd weekend in May of 2013 or in October/November as an
alternative option . There was general discussion of the Festival of Flight among the group . Charlie
suggested having a preliminary meeting to discuss how to reduce costs for the 2013 event. Jack Burrell
suggested the festival of flight to be an air show/trade show, to gain visibility from Airbus. Charlie and
Chairman Zunk mentioned involving Lee Lawson of the Baldwin County Economic Alliance to attend the
preliminary meeting, as Airbus and Training Center are opportunities for economic growth. Expected
date of the preliminary meeting will be in the first week of 2013 . Chairman Zunk appointed an event
committee for the festival of flight, naming Charlie Bassett as chair and Rod Platt and Jack Burrell as co-
chairs .
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned by acclamation at 5:30 p.m.
