HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-03-2007 Regular MeetingSTATE OF ALABAMA )( COUNTY OF BALDWIN )( The Airport Authority, City of Fairhope, met at 8:05 a.m., City Hall, Conference Room, 161 North Section Street, Fairhope, Alabama 36532, on Friday, August 03, 2007. Present were: Chairperson, Charles R. Zunk Councilmember, Michael A. Ford Kenneth L. Knutsen Louis E. Mapp Joe McEnerney Charles E. Bassett Planning Director, Gregg Mims Recording Secretary, Geniece W. Johnson, City Clerk Councilmember, Debbie Quinn Chairperson, Charles R. Zunk called the meeting to order at 8:05 a.m. Chairperson Zunk introduced everyone present, and turned the meeting over to Mr. Mims. Gregg Mims, City Planner stated that he and Mayor Kant have met with the Congressional Delegates in Washington DC to discuss possibly discontinuing the operation at N.A.S. Whiting Field, Silverhill, Alabama, due to overhead cost, and moving those operations to the H. L. "Sonny" Callahan Airport. Mr. Mapp inquired how many planes would be using the airport, and does the Navy work five or seven days a week. Gregg Mims stated that he did not know the number of planes that would be using the airport, but the days of operation would be Monday through Friday. Mr. Mapp also inquired if the Navy would bring their own crash equipment, and does the city have crash equipment. Chairperson Zunk stated that the City does have there own crash equipment, and the crash truck is tested everyday. The detail of whether the Navy would not operate out of the Airport current facility or build an additional facility will have to be worked out. Airport Authority Meeting August 3, 2007 Page —2- Chairperson Zunk further stated that at this point the authority would explore this idea fully. Councilmember Ford stated that the Authority is interested in exploring this and it could be a benefit to the City, and moved to consider the Resolution to express interest in the Navy relocating its training facility from Silverhill to H. L. "Sonny" Callahan Airport, and authorizing the Chairman to enter into discussions to achieve same. Mr. Mims stated that Chairperson Zunk, Mayor Kant, and himself would meet in early October with the Washington DC delegates to look further into this interest. Mr. Mapp requested that Councilmember Ford's motion be amended to state that no action will be taken until all of the Airport Authority concerns are addressed. Councilmember Ford amended the motion.
