STATE HEALTH OFFICER May 6, 1959 Mr. Arthur Mannich Chairman, Water Works Board Fairhope, Alabama Dear Mr. Mannich: BUREAU OF SANITATION ARTHU R N. BECK. DIRECTOR This is in reference to an inspection made on April 24, 1959, of the public water supply facilities at Old Spanish Fort, and operated by the Water Works Board in Fairhope. The inspection was made in company with Mr. W. E. Kilgore, the local operator. I was certainly glad to see that large air release valves have now been installed on the pure discharge lines. Mr. Kilgore reported that, after these installations, the water from the wells has not shown the milky appearance caused by air in the water. The well pump over both wells appeared to be in good, satisfactory condition. The chemical feeder which is used for adding Calgon and chlorine appeared to be in excellent operating condition. Samples of water were collected from Well No. 2, and from a new house under construction in Subdivision No. 2. The results of these tests show that the well water has 0.6 p.p.m. of iron and 40 p.p.m. of Free CO2. The sample collected from the tap on the system shows an iron content of 0. 8 p.p.m. and no Free COZ. These tests indicate that there has been only a slight addition of iron to the water in the distribution system. The fact that there was no free CO2 in the sample in the system indicated that the water is taking up some of the lime from the cement coating in the pipes, and that the water is standing a considerable length of time due to the fact that there are very few users in this Subdivision. Since the water works system has been expanded considerably, -2- Mr. Arthur Mannich Fairhope, Alabama (Old Spanish Fort) May 6, 1959 it is our opinion that serious consideration should be given to constructing ( a new well to serve this area. If one of the well pumps were down for a considerable length of time, then the system will be depleted of water; in other words, one well would not be adequate to meet the present or immediate anticipated future demands. If, at any time, we can be of assistance to you, or the owner of the water, works system, at Old Spanish Fort, please feel free to call on us. Yours very truly, C. W. STATE HEALTH OFFICER May 6, 1959 Mr. Arthur Mannich _Chairman, Water Works Board Fairhope, Alabama Dear Mr, Mannich: BUREAU OF SANITATION ARTHUR N. BECK. DIRECTOR I was sorry to learn that you were not available on April 24, 1959, when I was in Fairhope for the purpose of inspecting the water works facilities.. The inspection was made in company with Mr. George Dyson, Water Works -Superintendent. I was certainly glad to see that the tank had been painted and now presents a very pleasing appearance. It was reported that the tank was painted by the Dixie Bridge & Tank Company of Memphis, Tennessee. We certainly hope that yqu got a good job from this concern, since it has been reported by other municipalities that the work was not satisfactory. The well pumps located over Wells No. 2, 3, and 4, appear to be in excellent condition. The pump houses and surroundings were also found neat, clean, and orderly, thus indicating conscientious operation. The new aerator which was recently constructed appeared to be giving satis- factory results. The lime feeder which is used to further reduce the corrosiveness of the water, however, was not adding enough chemicals to bring the pH value above 6.6. It was suggested that additional lime be aded, and Mr. Dyson adjusted the machine while I was there. The chlorinator appeared to be.in excellent condition, and the chlorine residual indicated that the water was being adequately disinfected. If, at any time, we can be of service to you or your personnel, please feel free to call on us. Yours very tru Y. CWW/mz C. W.
