February 21, 2018
The Fairhope Recreation Board met Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at 5:15 p.m. in the Rec
Center at 803 North Greeno Road.
Present were Michelle Smith, Mary Gammer, Tom. Kuhl, Charlie Langham, Derek Thomas, and
Vann Saltz. Absent: Cathy Hudson, Bob Keyser, Jay Robinson and Sherry -Lea Bloodworth.
Gayle Fogarty took minutes at the meeting. Guest: Tomas Catar
The meeting was called to order by Vann Saltz at 5:16 p.m. The minutes of the November 15,
2017 meeting minutes were considered and approved on a motion by Charlie Langham,
seconded by Michelle Smith, none opposed.
Guests: Tomas Catar: City of Fairhope tennis pro, provided the group with proposed tennis court
hours and proposed tennis shop sales (see attached list of items/rental rates), there was general
discussion among the board members. Bruce White attended the meeting and shared information
about the Miracle League that is being constructed in Summerdale. He encouraged the board
members to share the information with others in hopes of gaining additional support for this
project, he shared the website with the board, www.miraclelea�)-ruecoastalalabama.com.
Mark Bernasconi, President of the Eastern Shore Masters Swimming Organization also attended
the meeting and presented a check for $1,000 to Tom Kuhl of the Fairhope Recreation
Department to purchase an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for the Fairhope pool.
A motion was made to recommend new hours at the Mike Ford Tennis Center at Fairhope
Stimpson Park to the City Council, the proposed hours are: Monday - Friday: 8 a.m. — 8 p.m.,
Saturday: 8 a.m. — 6 p.m. & Sunday 12 p.m. — 6 p.m., the motion was considered and approved
by Mary Gammer, seconded by Michelle Smith, none opposed.
A motion was made to request permission from the City Council to sell minor tennis supplies
and rental of a tennis ball machine at rates stated (see attached list of items/rental rates) at the
Mike Ford Tennis Center at Fairhope Stimpson Park, the motion was considered and approved.
by Derek Thomas, seconded by Charlie Langham, none opposed.
New Business: The Fairhope City Council approved Tom Kuhl and Vann Saltz to start looking
for land to potentially be purchased for the recreation department for future growth.
Updates: Tom Kuhl informed the group that the youth baseball league donated a batting cage to
the City, the City provided in -kind services. He added that many things in the budget were
approved, although the stadium was not approved to be ADA compliant and the track was not
approved in this year's budget. Tom stated that Soccer, Baseball and Softball opening days are
coming up. Michelle Smith asked Tom if there were any updates on closing the pool for
maintenance. Tom stated, not at this time, and added that lie is asking to plaster the pool in the
next budget year..Mary Gammer informed the board that the Fairhope Tennis Association (FTA)
donated a television to the tennis clubhouse and FTA will host a tournament in April. Vann
stated on behalf of Bob Keyser that he received a complaint on Facebook about youth football,
and players not getting enough playing time, there was general discussion among the board
members.
Mission Statement Discussion: Suggested mission statements - there was general discussion
among the board members, and it was determined that the members will continue to think about
the mission statement and finalize at the next meeting.
• To offer the citizens of Fairhope the best and safest recreation facilities in all sports and
leisure.
To grow, inspire and support the Fairhope Recreation community, men, women and
children.
• To promote and support recreational opportunities for Fairhope citizens of all ages and
abilities and promote sports tourism for the city.
Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:29 p.m.
