July 19, 2017
The Fairhope Recreation Board met Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at 5:15 p.m. in the Rec Center at
803 North Greeno Road.
Present were Tom Kuhl, Mary Gammer, Charlie Langham, Bob Keyser, Derek Thomas, Vann
Saltz and Michelle Smith. Absent: Robert Brown, Jay Robinson, Sherry -Lea Bloodworth Botop
and Cathy Hudson. Gayle Fogarty took minutes at the meeting.
The meeting was called to order by Vann Saltz at 5:15 p.m. The minutes of the May 17, 2017
meeting minutes were considered and approved on a motion by Bob Keyser, seconded by Mary
Gammer, none opposed.
Guests: Mike Russell of Fairhope Girls Softball attended the Rec Board meeting with others
from Fairhope Girls Softball, he informed the board that they have new board members for
softball. He stated that he is the president, Kasey Guimarin, vice president, Kristi Segars;
secretary, Brandy Moten; treasurer, Tommy Segars; equipment manager, Kim Smith;
concessions manager and Chad Casstevens; board advisor. He added that he and the new board
are eager to do what they can to make Fairhope Girls Softball program a success.
Old Business: Tom Kuhl informed the board that he has a meeting set with Elizabeth Hammock
regarding Flag Football the week of August 7, 2017. Mary Gammer asked Tom Kuhl where
Recreation was on installing the shades and wind screens for the tennis center. Tom stated that
the items should be on the City Council agenda on July 24, 2017.
Michelle Smith stated that Master Swim still have funds available from 2016, that has been
earmarked for the pool. She mentioned an AED and asked Tom what the pool needed before
October 2017.
Recreation Update: Tom Kuhl informed the group that the ADECA grant for soccer was not
funded, he stated that it was for sidewalks, shade pavilion and bleachers, etc. Tom said, we will
need to apply for another grant. He also informed the group that he has e-mailed Get Fit by
Jessica twice regarding the franchise agreement, but has not received a response. Tom added that
a man teaching softball lessons has been asked to complete a franchise agreement, Tom stated
that he thought he would have attended the meeting tonight. He added that a new 16 x 16 tennis
center shed will be completed in a week or two, this building will be used for storage of
maintenance equipment. Also, $80,000 will be used to replace preexisting fitness equipment,
Tom recently hired an employee with 30 years' experience in field maintenance, he has another
new hire beginning August 7, 2017, pool is going well. He also added that he is still working on
the master plan for Volanta, he is working on a list of engineering companies that have done this
type of work in the past.
Charlie Langham was glad to see the Recreation Department can wear shorts during these hot
summer days. He told Tom Kuhl good job on making this possible for his employees.
Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:55 p.m.
