HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-17-2017 Regular MeetingMinutes of the Fairhope Recreation Board May 17, 2017 The Fairhope Recreation Board met Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 5:15 p.m. in the Rec Center at 803 North Greeno Road. Present were Tom Kuhl, Mary Gammer, Charlie Langham, Bob Keyser, Robert Brown, Vann Saltz, Michelle Smith, and Cathy Hudson. Absent: Jay Robinson, Sherry -Lea Bloodworth Botop, and Derek Thomas. Gayle Fogarty took minutes at the meeting. Guest: Elizabeth Hammock The meeting was called to order by Vann Saltz at 5:15 p.m. The minutes of the April 19, 2017 meeting minutes were considered and approved on a motion by Bob Keyser, seconded by Charlie Langham, none opposed. Old Business: Bob Keyser informed the group that he contacted Jessica Watkins by e-mail about the franchise agreement of Get Fit by Jessica: Fit Mama Bootcamp, he informed her that the form was not complete. Since the last meeting, Bob has not heard from Jessica, Tom Kuhl informed the group the he will follow up with Jessica. Tom provided the board with an update on the Master Plan of Volanta, he stated that the City Council reviewed the plan and approved it. Robert Brown and the board discussed had general discussion of a franchise agreement using city parks for personal gain - specifically group fitness classes. Tom was asked to follow up with Jessica Watkins and ask that she attend another board meeting to further discuss her request to use City parks. Flag Football: Elizabeth Hammock attended the meeting to provide the board with completed paperwork needed to form a City League Flag Football Team. She stated that they had 8 teams and 80 kids last year and that registration for this fall will begin in mid - June. Games will be played on Monday and Thursday from September — October. Bob Keyser and Tom Kuhl had general discussion of the flag football league. Tom stated that he has all the paperwork required to form a new league and the City fields could accommodate the flag football league. The request to form a City League Flag Football Team was considered and approved on a motion by Charlie Langham, seconded by Bob Keyser, none opposed. A motion was made to reappoint Bob Keyser for an additional 4-year term to the Fairhope Recreation Board, on a motion by Charlie Langham, and seconded by Mary Gammer, none opposed. Recreation Update: Tom Kuhl reminded the board members that two years ago a resolution was passed by the City Council to increase field usage fees, ($50 per day, per field, $30 per staff member & $100 clean-up fee) he is having some issues with renters asking to reduce City staff, as they don't feel they are needed, allowing them to cut overall tournament costs. Tom asked the board, if the resolution for the field fees could be revised to be presented differently, to avoid this issue altogether. He suggested the new wording to read $125 per day, per field to rent a City field. Tom also shared thoughts on a recent soccer tournament. He added that St. Michael's has approached the City about using Barnwell as practice fields. Announcements: Bob Keyser provided an update on the Spring soccer tournament, 132 teams, all games were played in Fairhope and lots of positive comments were received. He added that Virginia Green set the state record for scoring in 7A Individual for girls' golf. The girls' golf team was 41" overall. Girls' Softball plays tomorrow in the state tournament. Cathy Hudson stated that FAST has started and it is going well, she is looking for more pool time. The City will host the City Meet the last weekend in July. Mary Gammer stated that the Fairhope Tennis Association has few requests: they would like a few shelves added to Fairhope Tennis Center building, to sell headbands, wristbands, etc. Also, they would like two vending machines added — one for snacks and one for drinks, as a lot of young people are playing tennis and requesting refreshments. Michelle Smith stated that she sat in on the last Bike/Pedestrian Committee meeting. The committee is working to prioritize their projects. She suggested to the group that they create a 5-year plan, like the Recreation Board. Michelle asked for a copy, Gayle Fogarty stated that she will send her a copy of the Rec Board's 5-year plan. Charlie Langham suggested that the City consider purchasing additional land, that is adjacent to current City property. He stated that the City is growing and the need for parks/playing fields will only increase. Charlie mentioned land at Hwy 13/Hwy 34 and land near FHS. Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:23 p.m.
