The Fairhope Recreation Board met Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at 5:15 p.m. in the Rec Center at 803
North Greeno Road.
Present were Tom Kuhl, Vann Saltz, Sherry Sullivan, Charlie Langham, Mary Gammer, Cathy Hudson,
Derek Thomas & Mike Ford (both arrived at 5:25 p.m.), and Diana Brewer (arrived at 5:30 p.m.)
Michelle Smith (left at 6:08 p.m.), Absent Bob Keyser. Gayle Fogarty took minutes at the meeting.
The meeting was called to order by Vann Saltz at 5:15 p.m. The minutes of the February 17, 2016
meeting minutes were considered and approved on a motion by Charlie Langham, seconded by Mary
Gammer, none opposed.
Guests: Eleanor Mauritson of FTA and Barbara Ochsner, resident and tennis advocate
Sherry Sullivan provided a recap of the three types of tennis courts were bid: (6) Six Asphalt,. (6) Six
Hydro or (2) Two Hydro & (4) Four Asphalt
Sherry provided pricing on each of the above combinations to the Rec Board and shared that it will cost
approximately $60,000 for maintenance of the hydro courts. She also informed the group that she
submitted an authorization to hire to the City for the position of a tennis pro. Vann Saltz stated some
concerns for the new position, as they would be responsible for maintenance of hydro courts and policing
of the courts if they are selected over asphalt. Sherry informed the group that many municipalities
throughout the state charge a fee for people to play on a hydro court surface. These locations offer an
annual fees or fee range from $2 to $6, depending on a person's age (ie: students, senior) and length of
time they occupy the court to play. The budgeted amount for the tennis court project is $300,000, which
includes courts, fencing and does not include lighting. Lighting for the courts will be considered in the
next budget year. There was a lengthy discussion of the pros and cons of each type of court.
A motion was made to recommend to the Fairhope City Council the installation of six (6) hydro tennis
courts, totaling: $409,897.90, 11 motioned by Michelle Smith, 2nd by Mary Gammer, motion passed, four
in favor and two opposed.
Discussion of Five Year Plan: There was general discussion of the 5 year plan, Sherry suggested making
a few changes to the current plan. Sherry asked Gayle Fogarty' to send the updated 5 year plan to the City
Clerk to add to the upcoming City Council work session on April 11.
A motion was made to recommend to the Fairhope City Council the naming of the "Fairhope Soccer
Complex" located on Manley Road, 1' motioned by Derek Thomas, 21d by Charlie Langham and
unanimously carried.
Recreation Update: Tom Kuhl informed the group that the grass is going down at the new park, BBQ &
Brew was held last Saturday, and Opening day of Baseball was on Sunday. Softball opening day was
postponed to a later date. Charlie Langham added that the Booster Club will have a food booth at the Arts
& Crafts festival by the Fairhope Museum.
Sherry asked that Gayle send the two motions made at the meeting to the City Clerk to present to the City
Council for final consideration.
Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:25 p.m.
The Fairhope Recreation Board did not meet on April 20, 2016, as they did not have a quorum.
