HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-21-2015 Regular MeetingMinutes of the Fairhope Recreation Board October 21, 2015 The Fairhope Recreation Board met Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at 5:15 p.m. in the Rec Center at 803 North Greeno Road. Present were Bob Keyser, Charlie Langham, Cathy Hudson, Mary Gammer, Derek Thomas, Mike Ford, Vann Saltz and Sherry Sullivan. Diana Brewer, Tom Kuhl and Michelle Smith were absent. Gayle Fogarty took minutes at the meeting. Guest: Ralph Webster The meeting was called to order by Vann Saltz at 5:15 p.m. The minutes of the September meeting were considered and approved on a motion by Bob Keyser, seconded by Mary Gammer, none opposed. Guest: Ralph Webster addressed the group about making sure recycling containers were available at all Fairhope recreation facilities. He added that people are putting recyclable items in the trash and trash in the recycling containers. Sherry added that signage is posted and education needs to start at a young age. Sherry also mentioned that having a recycling committee representative at the Team Summit in January of 2016 would be helpful to inform leagues about the City's recycling efforts. Ralph also suggested having someone make announcements over the PA system to remind guests of the parks to recycle. Old Business: Bob Keyser informed the group that the concession stand is 90% complete. He added that the volunteers working the concession stand are very happy and those purchasing items wait time has been greatly reduced. Recreation Update: Sherry Sullivan updated the group on Recreation: Manley Road project is coming along well, 2015-2016 FYE budget was recently passed, tennis court specs will be ready next week, $40,000 will be available in this year's budget to assess a master plan for the land at Volanta park, funding also available for the visitors side press box, and resurface of the track around the football field, work on the track will being in the Spring of 2016. 5 Year Plan: Bob Keyser reviewed the 5 year plan, Cathy Hudson mentioned that adding a 25 yard pool to the Rec Center would be a nice addition down the road. There was discussion of the different swim levels that use the pool. Bob suggested letting the leagues know at the team summit that the City has a 5 year plan for recreation, if they have any requests, they need to submit them at the team summit. Sherry added that she will e-mail the league contacts, so they can be prepared to bring their wish lists to the summit in January of 2016. Vann asked how the baby lifesaving class is going, Sherry commented that it is going really well. There was also discussion of the popularity of swim lessons being offered at the pool. There was general discussion of the expected date of completion of the Manley soccer complex. Bob Keyser mentioned that the City of Fairhope recreation locations - Recreation Center and Quail Creek do not offer a military discount, there was general discussion of the topic among the group, Sherry Sullivan stated that she will check into this and report back at the next meeting. Bob also stated that the Halloween Tournament set for Oct. 24-25, has 120 teams signed up. Mike Ford recognized Bob and Cathy Keyser for being inducted as associate members of the Fairhope High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Cathy Hudson informed the group that last Saturday, the Master's meet was held with 60-70 people from the area and the high schoolers were the timers. Battle of the Bay was last night, McGill boys and girls won I" place, Fairhope girls' placed 21, boys placed 3rd. November 3, The Fairhope Invitational will host 10 teams on November 3 at 6 p.m. December 10 will be the High School Championship at the Fairhope Pool. Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6 p.m.
