HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-15-2015 Regular MeetingMinutes of the Fairhope Recreation Board July 15, 2015 The Fairhope Recreation Board met Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at 5:15 p.m. in the Rec Center at 803 North Greeno Road. Present were Vann Saltz, Charlie Langham, Bob Keyser, Michelle Smith, Tom Kuhl, Sherry Sullivan, Cathy Hudson, Mary Gammer, Derek Thomas, Mike Ford and Gayle Fogarty took minutes. Diana Brewer was absent. The meeting was called to order by Vann Saltz at 5:15 p.m. The minutes of the June meeting were considered and approved on a motion by Bob Keyser, seconded by Charlie Langham, none opposed. Welcome: Vann welcomed Mary Gammer in joining the Recreation Board. Mary was appointed to the board during the July 15 City Council meeting. Old Business: Vann Saltz asked Bob Keyser if any old business needed to be addressed. Bob informed the group that no action was needed regarding old business discussed at the last meeting. Michelle Smith asked if there were any concerns about the Infant Swim & Rescue program that was discussed at the last meeting. Bob stated there were some concerns about how to educate the public. Michelle suggested offering the program at a certain time and informing pool members the program would be taking place at that time. ESMA Oktobersplash Fall Swim Meet: Michelle Smith informed the group that (ESMA) Eastern Shore Master Swimmers Association will host its annual Oktobersplash Swim Meet on October 17, 2015 from Noon-6 p.m., in the past this meet has been on Sunday. In an effort to attract more swimmers, it will be held on Saturday rather than on Sunday, presently she expects 50-60 swimmers. Michelle added that the pool will be closed from Noon-6 p.m. to host the swim meet, she has already received approval from Pool Programs Coordinator Noah Williams, although asked that she run it by the Recreation Board. Updates: Tom Kuhl stated that the Manley soccer complex is ahead of schedule. Also, bids for the new tennis courts will be available on the City website by June 17, 2015. There are three bids for this project: 6 asphalt courts, 6 hydro courts and 4 asphalt/2 hydro courts. Mary Gammer commented that having 2 hydro courts requires as much attention to maintain, as 6 hydro courts, she suggested installing 6 hydro courts or don't install any. Vann Saltz asked Mary how often the tennis courts are used, as she is an avid tennis player; she stated that if more courts were available then more people would be able to play tennis. Due to the heat, mornings and afternoons are the most popular times the courts are used. Cathy Hudson informed the group that the last FAST regular home meet will be July 16. Then swimming ESP in Orange Beach, Jr. Champs is July 18 in Bay Minette, July 21 is the pep rally, dinner and awards program, then July 24 and July 25 the City Meet will be held at the City pool. Bob Keyser informed the group that The Blast Halloween Soccer Tournament will be held on October 24 -25, 2015, 100 teams will participate. He also stated that the Spring Hill Frisbee Tournament set for October 3 - 4, 2015, has been cancelled. Bob shared pictures and an update of the concession stand progress with the group; he added that completing the concession stand is on a tight timeline; the improvement of the stand will reduce prep time and allow things to run more efficiently. According to Bob, last year's net sales from the concession stand totaled $23,000; Charlie Langham added that credit cards will be accepted when the new stand opens. Vann Saltz reported that the City has collected $4,051 from Michael Rodgers for swim lessons held at the City pool. 21 lifeguards were certified, 2 lifeguards were recertified and over 122 private swim lessons were completed. Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:45 p.m.
