The Fairhope Recreation Board met Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at 5:15 p.m. in the Rec Center at 803
North Greeno Road.
Present were Charlie Langham, Bob Keyser, Michelle Smith, Tom Kuhl, Sherry Sullivan, Cathy Hudson,
Jenny Douglass, Mike Ford and Gayle Fogarty took minutes. Derek Thomas, Diana Brewer &, Vann
Saltz and were absent. Guests: Ashley Bell (Pickleball) and Meg Johnson (ISR)
The meeting was called to order by Bob Keyser at 5:21 p.m. The minutes of the May meeting were
considered and approved on a motion by Cathy Hudson, seconded by Jenny Douglass, none opposed.
Old Business: Bob Keyser informed the group that the Manley Road project is on schedule. Sherry
Sullivan informed the group that the tennis specs went to Dan Ames.
Guest Attendee: Ashley Bell attended the meeting representing the Fairhope Pickleball League. He
informed the group that Pickleball is available on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 — 11 a.m. and
on Tuesday & Thursday from Noon — 2 p.m., the league is grateful of the Rec staff for allowing them to
play pickleball at this location. He requested that the Rec Board consider having 4 outdoor pickleball
courts at Stimpson Park -this would involve painting pickleball regulated lines on two of the tennis courts,
then both activities could be played on the same court.
Appointment/Reappointment: The Rec Board reviewed all the submitted applications and there was
general discussion among the group.
A motion was made to recommend to the City Council the reappointment of Cathy Hudson to the
Recreation Board, 1' motion by Charlie Langham and 2°d by Jenny Douglass and unanimously carried.
Cathy Hudson abstained from voting.
A motion was made to recommend to the City Council the appointment of Mary Gammer to the
Recreation Board, V motion by Jenny Douglass and 2nd by Michele Smith and unanimously carried.
Sherry Sullivan asked that Gayle Fogarty inform City of Fairhope City Clerk Lisa Hanks of these
recommendations for the next City Council agenda set for July 14, 2015.
Guest Attendee: Meg Johnson attended the meeting and shared information on her business Infant Swim
& Rescue; she would like to submit a franchise agreement to the City of Fairhope to use the pool at the
Fairhope Rec Center. There was general discussion among the board members; the group agreed this was
a program they would like to offer at the City pool to residents. Meg will work with Sherry Sullivan to
begin the franchise agreement process with the City of Fairhope.
Updates: Sherry Sullivan provided an update to the group on the splash pad, set to pour concrete
tomorrow, she stated that it is on schedule and is expected to open the middle of July. She is also
checking on the possibility of relocating the pelican fixture from the splash pad to the City pool. Tom
Kuhl mentioned the upcoming softball tournament, the fields are ready. Cathy Hudson informed the
group that FAST is in week 5 of the season, they have over 250 swimmers and the City Meet will be at
the end of July at the City pool. Charlie Langham asked how the summer camp was going, Tom and
Sherry commented that it was going well; over 50 children have attended the camp. Mike Ford
complimented the Rec Board and recreation department on doing a great job. Bob Keyser informed the
group that the soccer tournament held in May consisted of 140 teams, also stated that the soccer numbers
are up for the fall. The club travel level (U14 —U18) has merged Fairhope & Daphne, and is now being
called The Gulf Coast Rangers, supported/sponsored by Rangers FC. The affiliation of Eastern Shore
United, Blast, and Mobile Bay Football Club is now the Fairhope Soccer Club. It includes the Rec
program through the Academy program. This will help reduce the stress for practice fields and more
resources will be available. Bob also mentioned the Frisbee Tournament will be held on October 3 - 4,
2015 at Founders with an estimated 16 teams participating. Jenny Douglass stated that this would be her
last meeting to attend as a Rec Board member, she appreciates being able to serve on the board for the last
12 years.
Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
