HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-15-2014 Regular MeetingMinutes of the Fairhope Recreation Board October 15, 2014 The Fairhope Recreation Board met Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at 5:15 p.m. in the meeting room at the Recreation Center, 803 N Greeno Rd. Present were Mike Ford, Michelle Smith, Sherry Sullivan, Bob Keyser, Charlie Langham, Tom Kuhl, Diana Brewer (arrived at 5:30 p.m.) and Cathy Hudson (arrived at 5:30 p.m.). Vann Saltz, Jenny Douglass and Derek Thomas were absent. Gayle Fogarty took the minutes. New Business — Tom Kuhl provided an update to the group on He added that Spring Tournaments are already starting to be booked. There was discussion of additional upcoming soccer tournaments, Bob Keyser stated that he would get those dates to Tom as soon as possible. Nate provided a Recreation/Pool Membership update to the group. He stated that the both the pool and Recreation Center Membership numbers have increased over the last 12 months. He added that the increase is in part to the variety of classes that are being offered at the Recreation Center such as: Spin Class, Pilates and Pickle Ball. The Pool is offering more swim lessons; the City has made about $6,000 in revenue from the franchise agreement with the swim lesson coordinator. Members of the Rec Center or Pool can take advantage of the lecture series offered the 15t Thursday of each month, blood pressure screenings, blood sugar screenings and flu shot clinics. January — October 2013 Members 1,087 Revenue $243,000 January — October 2014 Members 1,339 Revenue $265,000 Sherry Sullivan provided an update to the group regarding the budget. She stated that the 2014-2015 budget was approved. The part-time recreation custodian is now full-time. Recreation has received some new equipment and improvements are planned for $1 Million was added to the Manley Soccer Complex budget, this amount was added for lights. $300,000 has been budgeted for the Tennis Courts, it is estimated that the tennis project will begin in 2015. Sherry added that she has received some inquiries regarding the possibility of installing clay courts. AED have arrived for Barnwell and for soccer. Training will begin soon; she is working to finalize a date to host this training session. She also added that a Child Endangerment program will be offered to leagues on November 4, 2014. (5:30 p.m.) A quorum was established and the official meeting was called to order by Bob Keyser. The minutes of the September meeting were considered and approved on a motion by Charlie Langham, seconded by Michelle Smith, none opposed. Barnwell Update - Sherry Sullivan informed the group that Bayshore Christian School has approached the City of Fairhope about using the fields at Barnwell. Sherry and Mike Ford are working with the Archdiocese of Mobile and the Barnwell Community Association to determine if this is a possibility, since Bayshore Christian School is a private school. Barnwell Community Association leases the land from the Archdiocese of Mobile. The City of Fairhope sub -leases the land from the Barnwell Community Association. Further discussion with the Barnwell Community Association is needed, as the association mentioned possibly dissolving — Sherry will be meeting with them on Friday. Sherry informed the group that Bayshore Christian School may come before the Recreation Board in November. Swim Update - Cathy Hudson provided an update on swim stating that there is no meet this week. Upcoming meets include Battle of the Bay, Meet in Gulf Shores, Fairhope Invitational and the County Meet is on November 10, 2014. Updates - Ultimate Frisbee Tournament was a success-12 teams, very pleased with facility, moved goals back when they were done with tournament. The group is already working on plans for next year. Halloween Tournament -114 Teams registered, Hall of Fame inductions and Tom Odom will be honored by the Booster Club at the FHS football game on October 24, 2014. FHS football is 7-0, Cross Country has started competing. Volleyball is doing well this year and will host the playoffs. Also, Tom Kuhl took over the community park this week. Manley Road Soccer Complex — Sherry provided an updated on the soccer complex stating that no final plans have been determined. The City is moving forward with a construction manager format. Also, mentioned again that $1 Million was added to the Manley Soccer Complex budget for lights. Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
