HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-21-2014 Regular MeetingMinutes of the Fairhope Recreation Board May 21, 2014 The Fairhope Recreation Board met Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 5:15 p.m. in the meeting room at the Recreation Center, 803 N Greeno Rd. Present were Derek Thomas, Charlie Langham, Bob Keyser, Vann Saltz, Diana Brewer, Cathy Hudson, Tom Kuhl and Sherry Sullivan. Absent were Mike Ford, Michelle Smith and Jenny Douglass. Gayle Fogarty took the minutes. The minutes of the April meeting were considered and approved on a motion by Derek Thomas, second by Bob Keyser, none opposed. Vann opened the meeting by welcoming back Rec Board member Charlie Langham. Recreation Update — Tom Kuhl provided an update to the group stating that the Dog Park has been reopened and the wall has been repaired. Tom mentioned the recent soccer tournament stating that it was a great success, 80 teams at Founders Park and 140 teams overall. Bob Keyser added that support from the City was great. Tom also informed the group that the sink hole at Stimpson has been repaired. Sherry added that logistics of the upcoming baseball tournament are underway; the Ozone State Tournament will be held on July 18-23. Safety Issues at Stimpson Field Walking Track —Tom Kuhl stated that he received a complaint that people are inline skating on the walking track at Stimpson Field. There was general discussion among the committee members. It was determined by the members that the track is open to everyone and will be used as a multi -purpose track. Community Projects Update — (Manley Road) Sherry Sullivan provided an update to the group on Manley Road, stating that it should be bid next week, a pre -bid meeting is set for June 13, and the Fairhope City Council should be able to be awarded the contract in July. Bob Keyser suggested having the bid open for (4) weeks, to allow enough time for the process. (Community Park) Sherry also provided an update to the group on the Community Park. She stated that a pre -meeting has taken place and the ground preparation will begin on May 22, park equipment will be shipped on June 2 and the park is set to open around August 1. (Tennis) Sherry stated that the franchise agreements are being enforced at the tennis courts. The applicant that submitted a franchise agreement to teach tennis on the City courts has been notified that the City Council adopted the "Professional' level certification, which will be required for all instructors. The applicant is working to obtain this level of certification. Discussion of Collegiate Ultimate Frisbee Tournament — Bob Keyser informed the group that he was approached by Michael Hays of the Spring Hill College Ultimate Frisbee Club regarding Fairhope hosting an Ultimate Frisbee Tournament. The tournament is set for October 4-5, 2014 and will consist of 22 SEC teams. The Club has two requests: support from the Recreation Board and in -kind services provided by the City to use the fields. The tournament would be held at Founders Park and behind the stadium. Bob Keyser stated that this would be a great opportunity to showcase the Fairhope fields. A motion was made to support the Spring Hill College Ultimate Frisbee Club by providing in -kind services — of waving the field rental fees, but not the one time maintenance fee of $300, during the tournament on October 4- 5, 2014, on a motion by Bob Keyser, second by Charlie Langham, none opposed. City Council member Diana Brewer stated that she would discuss this motion at the May 27, 2014 work session. New Business - Cathy Hudson stated that 200 kids have signed up for FAST and after school swim lessons are going well. Bob Keyser added that the Fairhope-Point Clear Rotary Club has $10, 000 to spend on a community project, the club may potentially donate the funds to rebuild the concession stand at Volanta. Bob also mentioned that the Booster Club replaced the AC system in the stadium concession stand last summer/fall. Dates to remember: Halloween Blast Tournament —October 25-26, 2014 Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
