HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-18-2013 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, September 18, at 5:15 p.m. at
the Fairhope Recreation Center, 803 North Greeno Road, Fairhope.
Present were: Sherry Sullivan (left meeting at 6:05 p.m.), Bob Keyser, Cathy Hudson (arrived at
5:30 p.m.), Chairman Vann Saltz, Tom Kuhl, Derek Thomas, Jenny Douglass, Councilmember
Mike Ford (arrived at 5:40 p.m.), Councilmember Diana Brewer. and City Executive Assistant
Gayle Fogarty took the minutes to the meeting. Absentee were: Michelle Smith and Kevin Grimes
Guests: Tommy Smith, representing Indoor Soccer League; Sid Vogel, Howard Eddy and Stephen
Davis, representing the Fairhope Rotary and Sunset Rotary clubs.
Chairman Vann Saltz called the meeting to order. The minutes from the meeting on Wednesday,
August, 2013 were reviewed and approved, Is' motion by Bob Keyser and 2"d motioned by Jenny
Douglass and unanimously carried002E
Update on Rotary District Grant — Sid Vogel, representing the Fairhope Sunset Rotary &
Fairhope Rotary Clubs shared with the group that the grant for the 10 interval training equipment
(see attached photos) was approved, the equipment will be installed around the Tennis Courts along
the walking track. Sid informed the group that it would take 4 - 5 weeks for the equipment to arrive.
He stated that he will work with Tom Kuhl once the items arrive, as far as coordinating delivery and
installation. A motion was made to accept the items from the Fairhope Rotary and Sunset Rotary
Clubs as City of Fairhope property once they arrive and are installed, 1st motion by Derek Thomas
and 2°d motioned by Bob Keyser and unanimously carried.
Discussion of Indoor Soccer League — Tommy Smith spoke to the Rec Board about the possibility
of starting an indoor soccer league. He added that this league would be open to high school age and
younger. Chairman Saltz asked if this would be run under the Fairhope soccer league? Tommy,
stated that is would be. Sherry Sullivan shared concerns about possible damage to the building. Bob
Keyser added that this league was endorsed by the Soccer Board and said, the game was played
differently than outdoor soccer. Tommy suggested that the game be played on Sunday afternoons in
the Rec Center. A motion was made to accept the idea of starting an indoor soccer league to begin
in December of 2013, Is' motion by Bob Keyser and 2nd motioned by Jenny Douglass and
unanimously carried.
Manley Road Update — Sherry Sullivan shared the plans for the Manley Road Soccer Complex
with the Rec Board. There are two field layouts. There was general discussion among the group
regarding the entrance areas. Bob Keyser stated that all the parking in one area is imperative. Sherry
added that the plans for this project are on the November 4, Planning Commission Agenda. The
meeting will be held at 5 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Sherry encouraged Rec Board members to
attend.
Report from Sherry Sullivan — Sherry stated that she proposes another part-time tennis person for
the Tennis Center. She also added that two custodian positions are in the proposed budget for 2013-
2014. She added that the fence has been installed at the Fairhope Community Park, except for one
section. She has a meeting set with Clay Adams on Friday, August 23 to discuss a timeline for
community meetings, meetings with schools to discuss the community park design.

Update from Tom Kuhl — Tom stated that Barnwell looks great. Two pavilions were donated from
Youth Football and the City of Fairhope staff put them together. He also mentioned that 18
handicap spots are being painted behind the north field house.
Update on Soccer — Bob Keyser stated that opening day for soccer will be September 21, 2013. He
also added that the Fairhope Pirates Drawdown will be held on September 21, tickets are $100 and
still available for purchase. He added that 68 teams are currently registered for the Halloween
tournament.
The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at the Fairhope Recreation Center.
The meeting was duly adjourned at 6:21 p.m.
