HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-17-2013 Regular Meetingray-ri The Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at 5:15 p.m. at the Recreation Center located at 803 North Greeno Road. Present were: Sherry Sullivan, Cathy Hudson, Bob Keyser, Michelle Smith, Chairman Vann Saltz, and Councilmember Diana Brewer. City Executive Assistant Gayle Fogarty took the minutes to the meeting. Absentee were: Jenny Douglass, Derek Thomas, Tom Kuhl, Kevin Grimes and Councilmember Mike Ford. Chairman Vann Saltz called the meeting to order. The minutes from the meeting on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 were reviewed and approved, 1" motion by Bob Keyser and 2"d motioned by Cathy Hudson and unanimously carried. Old Business — Naming of Manley Road Complex - There was general discussion among the group as to the naming of the Manley Road Soccer Complex. No decision was made as to the name, but a new name is needed. Fairhope Tennis League - Sherry Sullivan informed the group that she and Chairman Vann Saltz had a meeting with the Fairhope Tennis Association. Sherry stated that she believes the Tennis Association is going to move. forward with forming a league. If the group becomes an organized league then they will be insured by the USTA. New Business — Discussion of Adult Playground - There was general discussion of the adult playground concepts that Connier Nordan and Karin Wilson have proposed. The two concepts are quite different from each other. There was talk of adding this idea to the 5 year plan for the Rec Board. Chairman Saltz requested that Gayle Fogarty send him the phone number for Connier Nordan. Tennis Association - Sherry Sullivan provided an update on the Tennis facility. She stated that a new part-time employee be starting soon. Sherry added that she will be bringing tennis rules to the next meeting. In August, Sherry is also going to meet with a tennis representative from the City of Orange Beach to see how they run things. She also mentioned adding jr. play and the need for possibly two more part-time employees for next year. Michelle Smith added that the courts appear very busy and it looks like more courts are needed. ACE - Sherry also shared with the group that the City of Fairhope is participating in becoming an ACE community. She explained the purpose of the program and encouraged Rec Board members to complete the survey that will be mailed to your home. Update on Community Park- Sherry informed the group that Governor Bentley was in town on July 3, 2013. He met with Mayor Kant and toured the Fairhope Community Park. He agreed to release the funds of $429,000 to go toward the rebuilding of a new park. Walcott Adams is suggested architect of record listed on the Fairhope City Council agenda for the upcoming meeting. Once an architect of record is approved, and then they will come up with a site plan of 1 100 the park and submit to playground companies interested in bidding on the project, then share with the Rec Board. She also added that phase one is the playground and phase two will include the splash pad. Waterfront Parks - Diana Brewer asked the group if the waterfront parks where under the Rec Board. There was general discussion regarding this topic and she was informed that at this time those parks fall under Public Works. Update on Soccer — Bob Keyser stated that opening day for soccer will be September 21, 2013. He noted that two one day tournaments will take place this fall, also mentioning that a soccer beach tournament is on the horizon for the future. Update on Baseball — Chairman Vann Saltz informed the group that the 7-8 year old baseball team has advanced to the regional tournament. Chairman Saltz informed the group that Kevin Grimes will go to Troy for the Ozone State Tournament Credentials meeting on July 20, in hopes to secure the bid for the 2014 Ozone State Tournament. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 21, 2013. Bob Keyser suggested having the meeting at the Multi -purpose Indoor Training facility at Fairhope High School. Bob will confirm the location and e-mail the group prior to the next meeting. The winning ticketholder receives $5,000.
