The Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, May 15, at 5:15 p.m. at the
Recreation Center located at 803 North Greeno Road.
Present were: Chairman Vann Saltz, Tom Kuhl, Bob Keyser, Michelle Smith, Jenny Douglass,
Sherry Sullivan, Cathy Hudson, Kevin Grimes, Derek Thomas and City Council member Diana
Brewer. Gayle Fogarty took minutes at the meeting. Absent: City Council member Mike Ford
Vann Saltz called the meeting to order at 5:15 p.m. The minutes from the meeting held on
Wednesday, April 17, 2013 were reviewed and approved with a few changes, (date corrections
of April 22 city council meeting, July 26 & 27 Swim meet), 0 motion by Bob Keyser and 2"d
motioned by Kevin Grimes and unanimously carried.
Old Business -
Bob Keyser gave an update on the recent soccer tournament -stated that 139 teams played in the
tournament and 117 of them were out of town. Bob added that parking was an issue, as usual.
Bob also added that two sets of lightweight goals were stolen; the gates were not locked, which
was the responsibility of the soccer league.
Bob stated that there is an interest in re-establishing the adult soccer league and hopes to begin in
late June. The club would be run through MBFC (Soccer League), the teams would consist of 7
players on 7 players playing 2 weeknights and 1 weekend afternoon during the summer months.
The new indoor facility now has funding available; the building will have a turf field inside. Bob
added that the Booster Club has sent an invoice to the City of Fairhope for $35,000; Sherry
stated that she has not seen the invoice at this time, but would check on it.
New Business -
Report from Sherry Sullivan- Sherry stated that the new rules for the dog park were approved
and passed as they were on the City Council agenda from May 13, 2013 and will take effect on
May 21, 2013. She added that the dog park group wants the rocks removed, as they believe they
are hurting the dog's feet. The handicap sidewalk project in the small dog park began today and
should be completed in one day. The dog park group would also like a washing station added,
the group has about $3,000 in a City of Fairhope account for park improvements. There was
general discussion among the group regarding the washing station.
Sherry stated that she and Tom Kuhl met with the Rec Center and Pool staff in an effort to
integrate the two departments. Starting June 1, 2013, the Rec Center and Pool will have similar
hours, beginning in October personnel will not be an issue and both facilities will have the same
hours of operation. Sherry added that the hours for the Pool and Rec Center on Saturdays will be
not the same until October, due to budget issues. Also, all money transactions will be'received at
the Rec Center front desk and no longer at the pool front desk beginning June 1.
The new hours beginning in June are as follows:
Pool (M-F) 5 a.m. — 7 p.m.
Rec Center (M-F) 5 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Rec Center (Sunday) Noon - 6 p.m.
Pool (Sunday) Noon - 6 p.m.

Baseball Update -Kevin Grimes provided an update to the group stating that the end of the
season will be May 25, 2013. Kevin added that Fairhope has been awarded the Peanut and Ozone
District Tournaments. As well as, the 2014 Ozone State Tournament.
Community Park Update -Diana Brewer informed the group that the City Council is in the
process of setting some dates for Strategic Planning sessions. In these meetings the council will
discuss some long term goals, such as Community Park.
Sherry added that we are on a month to month lease with the Baldwin County School Board. She
is also working on a bid packet for the fence around the park. Sherry added that an architect will
need to be hired for this project, as the scope of work will be more than $50,000, Diana stated
that no action can be taken until the City Council hires an architect.
Old Business
Update on Coke Contract - Vann asked how the coke contract was coming. Sherry and Tom
Kuhl both shared thoughts on the fact that the contract is very in depth and taking longer to
finalize than expected.
Swim Practice/Meets - Cathy Hudson shared with the group that summer swim team has begun;
registration. has been the last two Saturdays and one more on May 18. After school practices
began this week from 4-5 p.m., the Tuesday after Memorial Day morning practices begin from 8
a.m. to 11 a.m., swim meets will be held in June on Thursdays, the meets in July will be held on
Tuesdays. The big City Meet will be July 26 & 27.
Updated from Sherry Sullivan — Sherry stated that she and Tom Kuhl will meet with Joe
Bullock of Preble-Rish on May 25, they will discuss a preliminary timeline for the Manley Road
project. Once they meet, Sherry added an additional meeting will be held with a council member,
city staff & soccer representatives to discuss thoughts on layout.
Update on Fairhope Tennis Association — Sherry informed the group that the Fairhope Tennis
Association has several requests. She stated that they are not an organized league and feels it is
time for them to form a league and follow the same guidelines other leagues are required to
follow. Sherry suggested to the Rec Board to have a meeting with Bill Carroll, Mary & John
Gammer and John Henderson of the Fairhope Tennis Association and some of the Rec Board
members to discuss the need for them to form a league. Both Bob Keyser and Michelle Smith
offered to attend the meeting. It was requested that Gayle Fogarty send a copy of the "how to
form a league" form to Michelle Smith and Sherry. Sherry added that she has a meeting set for
June 6 with the Orange Beach Tennis Pro to see how things are organized for their City.
There being no further business the meeting was duly adjourned at 5:55 p.m.
The next scheduled meeting will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2013.
