HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-20-2013 Regular Meeting123 The Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, March 20, at 5:15 p.m. at the Recreation Center located at 803 North Greeno Road. Present were: Chairman Vann Saltz, Tom Kuhl, Bob Keyser, Michelle Smith, Sherry Sullivan and City Council members Mike Ford & Diana Brewer. Gayle Fogarty took minutes at the meeting. Absent: Derrick Thomas, Jenny Douglass, Erik Cortinas (Resigned from board on 3/20/13) Guests: Leanne Pearson and Charlene Lee Vann Saltz called the meeting to order at 5:15 p.m. The minutes from the meeting held on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 were reviewed and approved by 1 " motion by Bob Keyser and 2°d motioned by Michelle Smith and unanimously carried. Vann stated that the quorum is down due to two members resigning. Fairhope Community Park Diana Brewer introduced guests -Leanne Pearson and Charlene Lee. Leanne shared handouts and a mailer from the 1995 Community Park build. Charlene shared information on the structure and recycling what can be saved. Bob Keyser added that an assessment was done, but maybe not everything was addressed. What good items are in the park? Those items were not noted in the report. Sherry Sullivan stated that a Certified Safety Inspection was performed by a Certified Safety Inspector. She added that the City only asked the Inspector to identify safety issues within the park, not what could be salvaged. Charlene and Leanne requested that Play By Design formally known as Leathers to assess the Fairhope Community Park and make a proposal of what can be reused. Charlene suggested creating a diverse committee on this project as the community works together. Leanne stated that she will send an e-mail to Gayle Fogarty to share with the group, with photos of what PBD can offer the community. Mike Ford asked a few question about the underground of the structure. Bob Keyser suggested working with Tom Waters, Sherry stated that she has already spoken to BCBE. Leanne and Charlene strongly felt that the Community Park needs input from the community to be a success. Bob Keyser suggested using the original builder of the park. Vann said, Leanne and Charlene, you are requesting that Play by Design come to Fanhope and asses the community park, is that correct? Leanne and Charlene agreed that was correct. Vann reminded the group that the Recreation Board is only able to make recommendation to City Council, as the Board is made up of volunteers. A motion was made 1 s'by Bob Keyser and 2°d by Michele Smith and unanimously carried for the Fairhope City Council to create/approve a contract for an assessment to be completed on the existing facility site known as the Fairhope Community Park, by the firm Play by Design, formally known as Leathers & Associates. The assessment will be of the existing condition of the Fairhope Community Park and will provide options, as the lowest cost and best use of the site along with cost for those options to include but not limited to: ADA compliant, open space, what items can be reused, what items are in need of removal, etc. Costs include: $550 assessment, 124 flight from Ithaca, NY to Fairhope, AL and one night hotel stay in Fairhope, AL during the assessment. The assessment will take one full day to complete. Cost approximately $1,200. Old Business - Sherry Sullivan updated the group on the dog park. Sherry reviewed the current City of Fairhope dog park rules. There was general discussion among the group, as to the age of a child with adult supervision and without direct supervision, dogs per person in the park and dogs being sick in the park. These are all things the group would like to add/change to the current rules. Sherry will send a copy of other dog park rules to the board by e- mail to review. Once everyone responds by e-mail, she will bring a final copy to the next meeting for review. Sherry also updated the group on the Coca-Cola Contract, stating that she is working on it and it should be done in April. Bob Keyser also asked for an update on hiring someone for the tennis center, Sherry replied that she hopes to have someone hired by the first part of April. There was also general discussion of what the process is for hiring someone to do the work at Founder's Park. Nominations- The group discussed the two applications that had been submitted for openings on the Rec Board. Kevin Grimes and Cathy Hudson. A motion was made 1 sc by Bob Keyser and 2"d by Michele Smith and unanimously carried to recommend Kevin Grimes and Cathy Hudson to the Fairhope City Council to be added to the Rec Board. New Business- Bob Keyser stated that Spring soccer will begin on April 6. He explained how Mobile Bay Futball works. The Club is split into three components -tournament, academy and Fairhope Soccer League, each are independent committees. Bob stated that the benefit is coaches, as clinics are offered, as well as the quality of play with the kids is better. Tom Kuhl brought up some concerns of the field being used by the City of Fairhope residents. Bob stated, that bulks of the matches are played in Daphne at Troine. He added that 13-14 year olds are playing in Fairhope mostly. Michelle Smith requested that the topic of swim be on the next Rec Board agenda. There being no further business the meeting was duly adjourned at 7:05 p.m. The next scheduled meeting will be held Wednesday, April 17, 2013.
