HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-20-2011 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at 5:15 p.m. at the
Recreation Center located at 803 North Greeno Road.
Present were:, Chairman Vann Saltz, Jenny Douglass, Derek Thomas, John Baker, Bob Keyser,
Erik Cortinas, Sherry Sullivan, Tom Kuhl,. City Administrative Assistant Pandora Heathcoe took
the minutes to the meeting. Guest: Karin Wilson.
Absentees were: Michelle Smith, Liz Chandler, and City Councilman Mike Ford.
Chairman Vann Saltz called the meeting to order. The minutes from the meeting on Wednesday,
March 16, 2011 were reviewed and approved by 1st motion by John Baker, and 2"d motioned by
Derek Thomas and unanimously carried.
Smart
Coast — Michelle Smith was not present however Karin Wilson spoke on her behalf for
the Smart Coast "Healthy Coastal Connections" bicycle ride which is scheduled
for Sunday, May 1st to begin from Page and Palette in Fairhope at 8:00 am and
will end at Lulu's Restaurant in Gulf Shores, All proceeds go to the Healthy
Coastal Connections project. There will be two starting times, one at 8:00 am and
one at 9:00 am. Would really appreciate some elected official participation.
Karin
Wilson — Karin Wilson, along with other citizens would like to see a fitness trial established
within the city. It would begin at the Fairhope Pier, end at the Recreation Center,
and incorporate all the existing parks and sidewalks along the way. There is a
grant available from ADECA for trails in the amount of $50,000. This trail would
be wheelchair accessible and the money raised will include maintenance for the
equipment. The City would provide maintenance and space for the equipment.
The City would bear the liability for any injuries and the equipment would be
placed where it is pleasing to the eye. The committee likes the concept but said it
would be something that has to go in front of the city council for approval. A
motion for this concept was presented lst by John Baker and 2"d motioned by Erik
Cortinas and unanimously carried.
Rec Center — Liz Chandler was out sick so Tom Kuhl reported that a bid was sent out for the
replacement of the gym flooring, however only one company bid. This bid
amount was $66,000 which the City Council rejected. Tom reported that dollar
for dollar, the Rec Center is almost exactly to the point as it was this time last
year.
The Skate Park will be receiving six (6) new pieces of equipment by May 2"d and
it should be installed shortly thereafter.
Youth football is holding early registration this year.
5-Year — Erik Cortinas and the subcommittee are continuing to work on the 5-year plan. He
reported that he feels that the projects within that 5-year plan should be prioritized
and dollar amount expectations should be placed on each of those items. The sub-
committee plans to meet again to go over this and report back to the Rec Board
Committee at the next meeting.
He reported that the baseball league has submitted paperwork to host the 2012
OZONE tournament. This tournament will invoke revenue to the City with over
165 hotel rooms being reserved along with shopping and dining.
There being no further business, on motion to adjourn by I" Jenny Douglass, 2"d by Derek Thomas and
unanimously carried, the meeting was duly adjourned at 6:30 PM.
The next scheduled meeting will be held Wednesday, May 18, 2011.
