HomeMy WebLinkAbout11-17-2010 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at 5:15 p.m. at the Recreation Center located at 803 North Greeno Road. Present were:, Jenny Douglass, Michelle Smith, Erik Cortinas, Liz Chandler, Sherry Sullivan, Tom Kuhl, Councilman Mike Ford, and Derek Thomas. City Administrative Assistant Pandora Heathcoe took the minutes to the meeting. Absentee were: Chairman•Vann Saltz and John Baker. In the absence of Chairman Vann Saltz, Jenny Douglas called the meeting to order. The minutes from the meeting on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 were reviewed and approved by 1" motion by Michelle Smith and 2nd motioned by Erik Cortinas and unanimously carried. Master Swim Club — Recognizing discussion from the previous October meeting, Michelle Smith requested the issue of creating a Master Swim Club for adults at the Recreation Center Pool. Michelle furnished a proposal for the Board to review. Twelve members of the Master Swim Team attended the meeting. Those members were: Bob McLaughlin, Steve Moore, Gardiner Green, Carrie French, Karen Sledge, Kelley Lyons, Will Smith, Janice Smart, Robert Hall, Betty Wilkinson, Elliott Lauderdale, and Cathy Hudson from the FAST Swim League. Gardiner Green spoke first describing what a Master Swim Team consists of. He reported that this is a worldwide organization with membership ages being from 18 years old to 100 year olds interested in competition swimming. Bob McLaughlin said he has been a member of the swimming pool since it was first built. He spoke of a swim group who began with 10 members and eventually increased to become two groups. He said they reportedly had a swim meet some time ago with 30 entrees. Many of these people stayed in town, however some did not. He reported that they do not have their own judges but must rely on the US Swim Association. Jenny Douglas asked if they were all currently members of the swim pool and the majority of them said they were single members of the pool. Cathy Hudson from FAST reported that FAST currently have approximately 250 children and they used all eight lanes to swim. She asked the Board to please consider how a Master Swim Team would affect FAST. Tom Kuhl said that more time and consideration would be required to ensure that the two leagues would not infringe on one another. He also voiced his concerns with how it might affect current members swimming laps each day and the summer activity once it begins. Tom said he would like to get the MST Board together with him and Liz Chandler for further discussion. This was agreed upon by Tom, Liz Chandler, the Rec Board and the Master Swim Team members. Samaritan — The Board recognized Clemer Leggett to discuss the Samaritan Coalition. Clemer Coalition discussed a program he has founded to assist young men and women between the ages of 18 — 27 years old. This program began by young people voicing their concerns and feelings about their inability to get into college or the military based upon their SAT scores. These young people do not have current jobs and feel their lives are going to waste. Clemer has found several teachers who are willing to donate their time to tutor these young people so they can possibly achieve their G.E.D. or get accepted into college. Sherry Sullivan asked if this group was affiliated with the Rotary Youth Club in Point Clear and Clemer said it was not. Clemer discussed producing football and softball teams for both men and women which would use City facilities to play on. He supplied a mission/vision statement from the Samaritan Coalition, along with membership application for the members to sign. Board members requested that he work with Tom Kuhl further in discussion before a decision can be made. Rec Center — Liz Chandler reported that she feels membership has begun to decrease due to the adjustment in membership dues based upon a member living within the city limits or outside the city limits. She said that clarification was vague at first because she was working with an old map of the City; however James Gillespie and Randy (AS400 computer programmer) created a report that supplies her with this information. She also reported that Youth Basketball practice begins December Is' and enrollment has been amazing. She will have to arrange the fitness classes around the basketball practices and games. Bids for the new basketball court floor will be going to the architect November 81n 2 Sports Leagues — Tom Kuhl reported that he attended numerous games at the fields located in Barnwell to observe the coaches behavior. He reported that he has spoken to both Mr. and Mrs. John Brandon concerning their compliant on the issues of foul language and the coaches' conduct. Tom feels that all issues have been addressed and corrected; however he strongly feels that the Youth Football League needs to create a Board before next year's season. Tom also reported that disc golf is really busy right now. They currently have 6 tee boxes but have been asked to construct 12 additional ones. They have a tournament scheduled for January 2, 2011. Tom also reported that this is off time for many of the leagues; therefore the necessary maintenance is being done to all of the fields. New Business: Vann Saltz Due to Hank Mullins submitting his resignation from the Rec Board, Vann has submitted two names so the City Council could vote on his replacement. The two names given were: 1) Bob Keyser, and 2) Kevin Grimes. These nominations have been placed on the upcoming City Council meeting agenda. Swim Pool — Tom Kuhl announced that effective Monday, November 15, 2010 Liz Chandler will be over both the swimming pool and the recreation center employees. Brittany will continue to perform the chemical checks, etc on the pool but will not be in charge of the pool. 5-Year — Erik Cortinas is continuing to work on the 5-year plan. He has created a worksheet for each entity under recreation for this plan. Mike Ford — Mike Ford voiced his concerns, as well as that of the other City Council members, that there may be a conflict of interest of Michelle Smith acting as a "coach for hire" to triathlon students and using the Fairhope City pool for swimming training while being a member of the Rec Board. Tom Kuhl advised that this is being looked into. There will not be a meeting in December. The meeting was duly adjourned at 8:00 p.m. Fairhope Recreation .Board November 17, 2010 meeting Amen 1. Fairhope, AL - Benefits: The Benefits of Competitive Swimming - www.teamunifV.com Physical Development: Swimming provides aerobic endurance and is the most beneficial form of cardiovascular exercise. It is the best sport for proportional muscular development. It enhances natural flexibility, develops, superior coordination, is the most injury free sport for children as well as adults, and can be a lifetime sport. 11 Intellectual Development: Learning proper technique engages the thinking process as new skills are learned. Swimers must develop and plan movement sequences. They learn that greater progress results from using their creative talents and exploring new ideas. Structured programs of physical activity develop a stroner self-image. The commitment of time required for competitive swimming teaches time management skills. They learn about self-discipline and sportsmanship. Swimmers must learn about nutrition and body cycles for appropriate fueling. Swimmers learn that excellence can be continually sought. Emotional Development: The nature of the sport dictates that swimming is a self -achievement activity. The responsibility of the performance ultimately lies with the individual in any given lane in a race. That individual over time will have many experiences positive and negative, encourageing and discouraging. Learning how to handle the success and failure AND self -achieving responsibility develops self confidence. Through perseverance, the swimmer learns courage, dedication, commitment and how to overcome adversity. Swimers learn to handle pressure and stress, sometimes self imposed, sometimes by others. Through experiences in swimming, swimmers learn attitudes and habits that will remain with them throughout their lives. Most swimmers learn to be "Can Do" people. It does so by partnering with more than 1,000 adult swim programs across the country; promoting information via the bi-monthly member magazine, SWIMMER, monthly e-newsletter, STREAMLINES, and usms.org; and by sanctioning and promoting pool, open water and virtual competitions. More than 50,000 adults are registered members of U.S. Masters Swimming. I am an average swimmer. As a child growing up in Vienna, Virginia I swam on our neighborhood swim team, the Shouse Village Sharks. In those halcyon days during the 1970s we all wore the Mark Spitz stars and stripes suits, ate raw Jell-O and basically swam because we hung out at the pool all day anyway and our parents didn't want to see us until dinner time. Swimming was just something to do. Since then I've enjoyed an on -and -off career in lap swimming to stay in shape. When a friendly lifeguard at our local Y approached me about joining the local Masters team, I balked. I mean, those are professionals; fiercely competitive and impossibly fit people who swim in meets all over the country. Type As, who multi -task and work 70-hour weeks at their day jobs before they hop in a pool and swim 10,000 yards. My goal is to wear a pencil skirt. I remember my first Masters practice. I was a nervous wreck, so much so that my husband offered to go with me, like a first grader being accompanied by her parent on her first day of school. I went solo and was met with smiles. I learned quickly that Masters is a mix of various ages and skill sets. We do have some Type As (ahem, Mark I'm talking to you) along with moms and dads and grandparents (working and retired), college students and triathletes. Although my first session was grueling and our coach kept telling me, "keep your head down" I liked it so much 1 returned two days later and have since rarely missed a practice. I hardly recognize the person who at first. refused to even consider attending a swim meet. After three years I'm one of the regulars. I love my teammates who are my second family., We talk, a lot. While swimming itself is relaxing, the intervals provide an excellent opportunity to vent about work and ask opinions. Our coach doesn't always appreciate our short rest time being used in this manner but we manage. While lap swimming kept me in shape, Masters has changed my life. Its given me great friends, real goals and a terrific routine. A constant that on occasion has been the, best part of my day. Another perk is SWIMMER magazine. While I enjoy the articles, workouts and opinion pieces, the swimmer profiles have been a frustration. Although I like reading about the former Caltech record holder in the 200 butterfly, I often come away feeling like the world's biggest loser. What about the rest of us? Okay I admit that I share tendencies akin to those exhibited by Homer Simpson and George Costanza. I have been known to be one of those people who avoids work at all costs. Of course in doing so, I spend more time in the art of avoidance than I would in doing the actual work. I'm not exactly a paragon of diligence. I don't like pain; I give in to my tiredness. I eat Twizzlers and fries. 1 drink wine. I like to sleep. I whine when we have to do butterfly or kick sets over 100 yards. Yet in spite of those qualities, I am learning. What started off as exercising with a dedicated group of people has become a necessity to my well-being. I have graduated from a leisurely lap swimmer to a somewhat competitive swimmer. I actually want to better my times. I want to win races. Still if I even qualify for nationals or worlds it would be a miracle. I'm in a very competitive age bracket right now. All of which makes me ambitious. Plan A is to continue the hard work. Plan B is nature's way. If I live long enough I'm sure to qualify for something. I hope. Thanks to our very patient and dedicated coach and my amazing and encouraging teammates I am making progress, slowly. More importantly my team hasn't kicked me off, yet. I like to think I provide much needed humor and asides. So if there are any more of us out there, good job. At least we're doing it.
