HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-19-2010 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at 5:15 p.m. at the
Recreation Center located at 803 North Greeno Road.
Present were: Chairman Van Saltz, Charlie Langham, Sherry Sullivan, Jennifer Douglass, Tom
Kuhl, Derek Thomas, Brittany Hoover, City Council Member Mike Ford, and Liz Chandler. City
Administrative Assistant Pandora Heathcoe took the minutes to the meeting.
Absentee were: Hank Mullins, Jim Godfrey, and John Baker.
Chairman Van Saltz called the meeting to order. The minutes from the meeting on Wednesday,
April 21, 2010 were reviewed and approved by 1st motion by Charlie Langham and 2"d motioned
by Derek Thomas and unanimously carried.
Vann Saltz — Mentioned that Charlie Langham and Jim Godfrey terms on the Board end May
31, 2010. He also mentioned that they were both recognized at the last City
Council meeting for their years of service on the board and received plaques from
the City. Liz Chandler was also recognized at the last City Council meeting for
her acts of heroism in saving a Recreation Center member's life by administering
CPR.
Tom Kuhl — Reported that he the lease with Coca Cola still has not been resolved. Lisa Hanks,
City Clerk has given the lease to Tut Wynne, City Attorney for review. There has
not been any decision made at this time. However, Tom did report that he will
touch base with the clerk's office this week to check on the status of the lease.
It was reported that a new engineering firm, Clark, Geer, Latham & Associates
from Mobile came to inspect and give a proposal for the reconditioning of the
football stadium bleachers. This firm was used to inspect all the stadiums after
Hurricane IVAN for the Baldwin County Board of Education. The representatives
said they would have a.quote within a week. Thompson Engineering has already
submitted a proposal for this week in the amount of $283,000.
Tom reported that the dedication for the City Dog Park went very well with an
estimated fifty (50) participants.
Reported that the FAC Committee has once again asked for ways to reduce the
budget and cut costs. It was discussed to close both the pool and the Recreation
Center on Sundays and all holidays. This would eliminate paying City
employee's time and a half for working holidays and member participation on
Sundays is very low. He also suggested closing the "Summer Fun " day camp in
2012. Tom also reported that the City Council had approved the hiring of
additional part time employees for the pool and that all staff that is replaced in
either program will be hired on a part time status only. He also suggested to the
FAC Committee for bringing in additional revenue would be an aquatic fitness
program in the pool and water exercise classes. Tom did report that programs that
conflict with outside programs (i: e: martial arts, etc) would not be implemented
at either center.
Franchise
Agreement— Tom suggested that the franchise agreement be completely eliminated and type up
a new legal agreement that gives the City some revenues back from the vendor.
The tennis courts could be profitable based on a new agreement and locating the
right vendor.
Brittany
Hoover— Brittany reported that swim team practices will begin June 1, 2010. The pool has
400 bathers each day and the current hours of operation do not give the pools
adequate time to turn over for the next day. The current pool hours are 5:00 a.m.
until 8:00 p.m.; Brittany requested that the pool closing hours be changed to 5:00
a.m. until 7:00 p.m. approved by 1st motion by Derek Thomas and 2°d motioned
by Jenny Douglass and unanimously carried.
Rec Center — Liz Chandler reported that the Recreation Center is currently at an approximate
2020 member status. She also reported that they are currently to the $235,935
revenue mark. However, she reported that 10% of members are currently 90 days
past due. She and Jay have drafted a letter to the members needing to renew their
dues: (1) is based upon members who continue to use the facilities, and (1) is
based upon members who have not returned to the Recreation Center. Since
automatic draft is not used for membership dues, Liz reported it is often difficult
to get the members to renew. Mike Ford said he will meet with the Mayor on this
issue. Liz also reported that the City Council did approve for hiring two
additional instructors.
Tennis
Courts — He met with the tennis court vendor to discuss the tennis courts and possible
projects for them. He now feels better about the situation, however will continue
to monitor them and will also continue to work on getting the written agreement
drawn up and signed.
Nominations —Since the April meeting, the City Council postponed the appointments to fill two
vacant spots. Debbie Quinn, City Council member voiced she would like to see a
more diversified membership on the Board. Since that time, Jan McElroy has
submitted her application for the Recreation Board. Hank Mullins has submitted
his application to renew his position on the Board. According to the City Clerk's
office, these applicants have been placed on the upcoming City Council for
discussion to fill the three positions.

Sports
Leagues — It was also discussed that an invitation to be sent to all Presidents or Officials of
the sports leagues to attend each Rec Board meeting and be placed on the Board
as ex officio. However, until the City Council fills the vacant positions, this
invitation will be postponed. Vann Saltz thanks the Board members who
currently attend many of the sporting events; however he suggested that Board
members try to make them more visual to the leagues and the citizens.
The next meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, June 16, 2010.
The meeting was duly adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
