The Fairhope Recreation Board met Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 6:30
P.M. at the Gym at the Volanta Park.
Present: Charlie Langham, Chairman; Derek Thomas, Jenny Douglass,
Sherry Sullivan, Eddie Boyett, Recreation Director and Betty Rivenbark,
Secretary. Absent: John Baker, Vann Saltz, Hank Mullins, Jim Godfrey,
Mike Ford
Tony Caminiti and Jeff Warrington, representing the Men's Church Softball
League, were present and Charlie asked them to address the members.
Tony went over a list of items that he felt needed addressing at the Barnwell
Fields and went on to say there are only 8 leagues now where in the past
they had twelve and he believes being moved to Barnwell is part of it. He
said he has talked to Eddie about all of this but wanted to express to the
board his concerns: he cited not enough lights, poles crooked, alignment of
lights, security lights, bathrooms, concession stand and mosquitoes. In
parting, he said we really need to get this worked out before the league
starts to play in the spring. They said they would love to have another two
fields and were told it was probably not going to happen. He was thanked
for coming and expressing his concerns.
The minutes of the June meeting were dully approved as written and
approved on motion by Derek Thomas, 2n by Jenny Douglass and
unanimously carried.
Eddie passed out a list of the various projects he had going on and status of
each one including Stimpson Field, Additional Pool, Barnwell Property,
Volanta Ball Park, Football Stadium, new Rec Center and said while
discussing this that he sees us needing a new place to play basketball
because of the problems the construction will cause at the gym. Faith
Baptist Church, Catholic Church and Elementary School were mentioned as
ones to contact; and Skate Plaza (copies in file)
He mentioned the seat back benches that will be placed in the reserve
section of the stadium that have been funded by the Booster Club.
He talked about the problems with Coca-Cola and how we had their support
over the years but now cannot even get them to answer his calls.
He told of Spanish Fort using our stadium on August 31 and October 19tn
and said they will do their own concession stand and parking.
He mentioned again we need to look for additional land for growth and gave
an update on the bond monies saying we should come out all right.
The meeting was duly adjourned at 7:45 PM.
