2006 at the Volanta Street Gym at 6:30 PM
Present: Charlie Langham, Jim Godfrey, Sherry Sullivan, Vann Saltz, John
Baker, Jenny Douglass, Mike Ford, Council liaison; Eddie Boyett,
Recreation Director, and Betty Rivenbark, Secretary
Absent: Hank Mullins, Derek Thomas
The minutes of the March 15th meeting were duly considered and approved
on motion by Jenny Dougass, 2nd by Vann Saltz and unanimously carried.
The meeting was turned over to Eddie who made the following reports:
Field House — He said this is the third week of trying to get the wet well
moved and finished. He is hoping everything will be finished by Friday
and next week hopefully the building will get started. He said all the bids
had gone out on the building, plumbing, blocks, HVAC and will be
considered at the April 24th council meeting. He said money wise we are
doing ok that if everything goes as planned we might have enough money to
do the bathroom at the top of the field.
Little swimming pool — He reported on that saying we had to cut part of that
project and it was never actually finished. He would like permission to start
looking for new equipment. Vann Saltz said he would move to ask the City
Council for up to $7,000 out of the Improvement Fund to buy equipment for
the little swimming pool. Jim Godfrey 2nd the motion and it carried
unanimously.
Trip to Chicago — Eddie and Charlie reported on their fact finding trip to
Chicago saying overall Flossmoor was very informative and that the facility
in Homewood was very nice. They told the board how it works up there and
said they did not know how it will work in concert with our plans for Thomas.
They said that up there they have their own parks district and that property
taxes go to the operation of the parks and they are elected just like the
school board is elected down here. Eddie had a rough sketch drawing
of a possible layout of the placement and number of buildings and told what
Thomas said they needed. He said he also talked to the hospital and said
one thing proposed is they collect the money for the programs and pay us a
lump sum of $100,000 a year. Conversation followed on different ways to
handle the programs and the money. He asked each member how they felt
about this and a lengthy discussion followed with each expressing their
opinions about proposal. The consensus was don't give away the "show",
look at all sides, if there is anyway we can build the buildings and let them
have their programs in our buildings this would be ideal. Vann also wanted
to make sure we kept control of any fields during Fairhope's seasons.
Mike Ford reported on the proposed sales tax issue and meeting was duly
adjourned at 8:10 PM
