HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-19-2005 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, October 19,
2005, at 6:30 PM at the City Administration Building, 161 N Section Street,
Present: Charlie Langham, Chairman; Jim Godfrey, John Baker, Hank
Mullins, Ginny Douglas, Mike Ford, Council Liaison, Eddie Boyett,
Recreation Director, Betty Rivenbark, Secretary
The minutes of the August 17, 2005, meeting were considered and duly
approved as written on motion by Jim Godfrey, 2"d by Hank Mullins and
unanimously carried.
Charlie opened the meeting and turned it over to Eddie who reported
he had nothing new, the five year plan for the recreation department was
presented at the last city council meeting. He mentioned the skateboard
park and said with all the publicity he had talked to different people about it
but we had always intended to build the park, as a matter of fact he had
suggested the site and we had submitted the grant in 2003, and if we get the
money we would build it sooner but it is not a priority on the list. He said
someone asked him about the liability of having a park and he talked with
the city's insurance company and they said it would not add anything to
city's insurance to have this park. Eddie said he had met with the group and
he and Charlie met with Debbie Quinn this morning. Further discussion led
Mike to ask Eddie if he would come to the City Council meeting Monday
evening and explain what the recreation board had already been doing on
this to clear the air.
Vaughan Kelly and James Roberts came in and Mike said he had called
them and asked them to come to discuss the possibility of the city acquiring
the softball fields located in Barnwell. He had called Barnwell and was told
that they had been leased to Vaughan Kelly. He went on to say for Mr.
Kelly's benefit, the city was running out of room and looking for at least 40
acres for recreation to expand. John Baker asked what our objective was
and Mike explained that the city wished to move the softball fields from
Stimpson Field to the new property, put tennis courts on Stimpson Field, use
present tennis court property to build recreation complex and join swimming
pool and gym. Vaughan told him there were others that he needed to talk to
about this, Boyd Little, Chris Nelson. Further discussion led to a decision
that Vaughan needed to go talk to his people and call Eddie and he and
Charlie can meet with all of them to discuss it further. Vaughan did say he
uses the facility to hold tournaments on now. Hank offered to the board
after Vaughan left that he thought this was too far out to locate city facility
and offered to call and inquire about other land in town and brought up
situation at Stimpson Field about tournaments in the past, that he thinks we
should think of other alternatives if we could.
John Baker told the board that the building plans for Volanta are moving
forward, that nothing will be done until football season over but should have
them by the first of the year. He did say he knows the Mayor is in
agreement about moving the lift station.
The meeting was duly adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
