2003 at 6:30 PM at the City Administration Building, 161 N. Section Street
Present: Charlie Langham, Chairman, Jim Godfrey, Vann Saltz, Larry
Thomas, Sherry Sullivan, Mike Ford, Council Liaison, Betty Rivenbark
Secretary. Absent: Trisha McMahon, Hank Mullins, John Baker, Eddie
Boyett
The Chairman recognized Stacey Mitchell who was present tonight and
told the board the problems she had encountered with the Dixie Youth,
9-10 old league and choice they had made for All Star Coach. Vann, a
board member for Dixie Youth, explained to her the way the coaches are
chosen and how voting happened this year. Charlie told her that we
sympathized with what she is saying as this is an existing that has not
been solved but also a problem with the league itself and the Recreation
Board only provides facilities and that if she had a problem with the league
she needed to go to the league meetings and express her feelings there.
The minutes of the May 21 st meeting were considered and duly approved
on motion by Jim Godfrey, 2"d by Larry Thomas and unanimously carried.
Mike Ford brought up to the board the problems he is encountering at the
Volanta ballpark parking. Several things were suggested as a way to get
some uniformity so people will not be blocked in, the best being the
barricades we use for Mardi Gras. This suggestion to be made to Eddie
when he gets back.
Charlie gave an update on the pool and said that the rain has slowed them
down but they are still hoping to be through by mid July. Most thought it
would probably be August.
Stimpson Field was discussed again and it was decided to pull the rules &
regulations, look at them and see what best course of action is. It was
also suggested talking to Chris Browning and see if he will enforce rules
we have as this seems to be part of the problem.
Mike Ford brought to the board's attention the Hayek property that is for
sale and has been offered to the city as a possible tennis center. Mike
said he, Eddie and the Mayor went out there and as a result showed a
sketch plan that had been worked up showing 7 tennis courts with existing
house, that could be turned into complex, and swimming pool. Discussion
followed with pros and cons being pointed out and it was consensus of
the board not to consider this property. This was put in the form of a
motion by Larry Thomas to not proceed with this as recreation facility.
Jim Godfrey 2"d the motion and it carried unanimously.
Sherry reported that Eddie said the summer program is doing well, 35-40
kids signed up.
There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned at 7:15PM
