HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-16-1996 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, October 16, 1996
at 6:30 PM at the City Administration Building, 161 N. Section Street.
Present: Chairman Richard Bass; members Larry Thomas, Trisha McMahon,
Charlie Langham. Council Liaison Mike Ford, City Facilities Director Phil
Rutherford and Secretary Betty Rivenbark.
Dale Vines was present representing the High School Girl's Soccer Program.
He was asking about the fields at the new high school and when they might be
available as the program begins January 27, '97. He was told that the fields are
being worked on, it has been leveled that they need to fill in around the sprinkler
system. It was suggested, because we are so short handed in personnel, that
maybe he could use some high school students to help with this project. That
they are sanding now, that the sand needs to settle and sand again, that they
are doing this by hand and it takes time but they could surely help. He thanked
the board for all they have done for the recreation program and said he would try
and recruit some manpower to help with the fields.
The bills were approved on motion by Larry Thomas, seconded by Charlie
Langham and unanimously carried.
The minutes were approved on motion by Charlie Langham, seconded by Larry
Thomas and unanimously carried.
At this time the board went and looked at the sites being considered by the
board for construction of the gymnasium at Volanta Street park. It was the
consensus of the members that the site behind the swimming pool was the best
offered and pass this on to the Mayor.
Under old business Larry Thomas talked about the ongoing proposal of park
land that the FSTC was asked to give the city. He said a proposal was made at
the September FSTC meeting that this land go to the City with the stipulation
that it be designated for recreation use first.. that the meeting was not held like it
was supposed to this month where it would be voted on, but one scheduled for
tomorrow night, he asked for 720 ft of Cty 44, 1500 ft. deep. That if we get 700'
X 900' we could easily build 4 ballfields and 4 soccer fields, that there is some
low area that can be used for parking ... that it is directly adjacent to the high
school and could use city utilities. This was discussed at length by all present,
Larry to let us know what happens.
The recreation building at Volanta was discussed again and after discussion
Larry Thomas made a motion to pass on to the mayor and council that it was the
board's wishes to accept base bid(of low bidder) with the alternatives that
includes drop and insulation. Charlie Langham seconded the bid and motion
carried unanimously. Also include that the best site was the one behind the
tennis courts facing the highway(east).
The budget for the '96 -'97 year was discussed and approved by the board(copy
in file) on motion by Larry Thomas seconded by Charlie Langham.
Richard mentioned the letter from Terry Knight thanking us for waiving the $1500
fee again th;s ;year for the 5 high school games. He mentioned that they still are
financially strapped and board thought it good idea to pass this on to the mayor.
Larry mentioned that the Dixie Youth would be donating $7,500 to the board to
go towards the building on materials. Charlie Langham moved to accept this
money (up to $7,500) to be used on new building. Trisha seconded the motion
and it carried unanimously.
There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
