at 6:30 PM at the City Municipal Complex, 161 N. Section Street.
Present: Stanley Fant, Charlie Langham, Bob Callahan, Rae Jackson,
Larry Thomas, Phil Rutherford, Facilities Director, Eddie Boyett,
Recreation Director, Mike Ford, Council Liaison, Betty Rivenbark,
Secretary
Leslie Odom was present to talk to the board about taking over the Young
Street recreation facility when the present lease is up in August 1995. Mike
Ford briefed the board on what Leslie hopes to do. He said that he sees what
the Boys & Girls Club is doing but he feels they are not filling a need that
we have with the teenagers. That he would like to turn it into a family park.
Leslie said he would like to get the softball field back in shape, basketball
goals up and lights on. (Phil said this has been done). Further discussion was
held and it was decided if he could get his board together and take over the
positions already established on the Young Street Board they have now that
it would work out great. Eddie offered that he had just helped do this with
the basketball association and that he would be glad to offer his help. Leslie
offered he had already talked with all the current board members and that
they did not seem disagreeable to what proposed. He was told we would need
something in writing, but if new board could take over old board positions
the transition would be easier. Bob Callahan and Larry Thomas offered to
help in any way. Leslie thanked the board for their time and said he would ge
with Eddie.
Tony Caminiti came representing the men's church league softball association.
He said the best thing we have done is to limit the leagues playing in Fairhope
to Fairhope churches. He said he is president this year and that they expect
11-12 teams. The season starts 4/3 and will end 7/10 with a tournament the
last weekend. He has been talking to Eddie about the fields, and everything
is worked out. He needed to know what was required for insurance. He
was told liability. He thanked the board and left.
The minutes were approved as written on motion by Larry Thomas, seconded
by Charlie Langham and unanimously carried.
The bills were approved on motion by Larry Thomas, except for the FSTC bill
which we are holding for a month, Bob Callahan seconded and motion carried
unanimously.
The band parents request, made last meeting by Carol Stickney, was discussed
Eddie said he talked to Carol Stickney and left it where she was suppose to
get back with him and she has not yet. He showed the board a drawing where
they are proposing to put the signs. The board discussed what we want at
the city parks at length and finally a motion was made by Bob Callahan to
eliminate all commercial signs at Stimpson and Volanta Park effective 6/1/95
excluding the electric scoreboards. Rae Jackson seconded the motion and the
vote was for the motion: Bob Callahan Rae Jackson and Stanley Fant.
against the motion: Charlie Langham and Larry Thomas.
Eddie also reported he had sent a letter to Mary Burtnett(in file) and that
she promised she would have the necessary papers to him in the morning.
Larry reported the property deal still up in the air. Could not get parcel we
had talked about but now looking at parcel across from the high school, north
side of Hwy 44.
Eddie- said Aaron was looking into lights for the new fields. T.-ball field complE
Robert is scheduled to do irrigation this weekend. That they are still planninc
work needed to be done on bar-b-que pit. That the new fence is up on high
school field. They are getting ready to get started on Stimpson Field, be
thru next week. He also reported act of vandalism on tennis court windscreen!
Bob Callahan presented letter showing Coca-Cola increase in price and reported
letter they were sending out to parents showing cost increase in program and
why necessary. He also reported Ray Moore new President of soccer association
Eddie reported he has asked to be active in Baldwin County Sports Festival
and expressed desire to do so. No one saw a problem with him doing it.
There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
