Jackson and unanimously carried.
Under old business the board thanked Bob Callahan for all his work on the NAI
tournament. They also thanked Eddie and his crew for all they had done. All
in all we came out okey, but learned some lessons about next time from it.
IEddie reported on the progress of the BarBQue pit. He said they are going to
put iit in concrete so it won't walk away.
Mike Ford talked to the board in length about their request for purchasing
land as -a first choice over the building of a community center but that they
really wanted both. He told of the possibility of it being placed at Vo-lanta
where the fitness trail is, the board did not think this is a good place. He
talked about the possibility of the youth using the old Adult Rec. Center when
they move out. He also talked about the colony buying Maradik's land and us
possibly building parks there. The downside of this was it might' be 2-years.
before the Maradik deal is completed. The board talked about the great number
of people we are trying to accomodate at our pars ,and the consensus was we
need to get rid of the teams from other towns that are participating and limit
use to people in Fairhope and Fairhope. school zone. Mike, Larry and Bo
had been out with the Mayor today and ridden over different land trying to
see what available and what could be done. Mike said he had talked to Larry
Newton and he understood that we really wished to have our own land, no
problem there. The board talked further about the teams from outside of Fair -
hope using our fields. The church league has 28 teams and 14 of these are
from outside Fairhope. Mike also talked about possibility of using armory for
center. The new field we plan to build at Volanta was talked about and
how we could possibly put a small concession stand there and light the field.
The board talked further about eliminating some outsiders and Bob Callahan
asked if we are willing as a board to take action. He made a motion to limit
participation by the men's church leagues to , residents of Fairhope and Fairhope
Police Jurisdiction. Charlie Langham seconded this motion and it carried
unanimously. Discussion had been whether to limit all sports to Fairhope
residents but it was decided to start with the merr`s church league and tell
all the other associations that this is preparatory, that next year it appears
that people -whar participate in, leagues- that use --our facilities -will be - limited
to "people -f•ivin j -in Fairhope or Fairhope's school jurisdiction. Larry Thomas
made this in the form of a motion and Rae Jackson seconded. Motion carried
unanimously.
The board talked some more about the community center and asked Mike to
convey that the board still wished to have one, that since we are alleviating
to a point the overcrowding situation we still wished for a community center
to be considered. It was discussed that somewhere in the translation it
got conveyed that this was a youth center and the board wished it known that
it is to be a community center, Eddie said he still had the original plans and
that when it got to Buddy Richmond was when the confusion started. Mike
suggested the board meeting with the Mayor since this is planned for Monday
night council meeting action. Saturday morning was a time suggested. Betty
to contact everyone for sure.
There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
Note* Center was taken off of the agenda for council meeting for Monday
' night so board did not meet with Mayor at this time.
