HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-18-1994 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, May 18, 1994 at the City Administration Building, 161 N. Section Street at 6:30 p.m. Present: Chairman Richard Bass; members Charlie Langham, Stanley Fant Rae Jackson, Charlie Smith, Larry Thomas; Mike Ford, Council Liaison,Phil Rutherford, Facilities Director, Eddie Boyett, Recreation Director and Betty Rivenbark, Secretary The minutes of the April meeting were approved on motion by Larry Thomas seconded by Charlie Langham and unanimously carried. The bills were approved on motion by Charlie Langham, seconded by Stanley Fant and unanimously carried. Under old business Eddie reported on the state soccer program that was hosted over here by McGill. He said that everything went well, the officials and coaches were very complimentary. The status of the pool was asked about. Phil said everything is fine there, it is open and running well. Eddie reported that the NAIA had gotten a copy of our contract for the stadium and had rewritten it -and sent it back for us to look at further. Under new business Richard reported that Phil had called him and told him about a tractor that we could get through state surplus for $7200.00 and that he contacted with 2 people and they had approved it so he gave him the go ahear, he just wished the records to reflect this action. Charlie Langham moved to approve the purchase of the tractor, Rae Jackson seconded and motion carried unanimously. Discussion was held on the proposed new fields at the high school a projected cost of $30,000 per field was quoted with a cost of the concession & facility building $35,000 for a total cost of $125,000.00. Eddie said he had met with Eddie Nelson and Mr. Schottgen and everything is all right with them. It was reported that we waited too late to get state grant but we can reapply in September. Stanley Fant moved to pass on to the Council that we are ready to proceed with the paper/ legal work necessary to start pursuing this. Charlie Smith seconded and motion carried unanimously. Eddie said he is still working on getting the survey on Volanta Park hopes to have something by next meeting. Charlie Smith reported to the board some problems he had observed with the girl's softball association and also the lack of insurance. The board discusser at length them having to present insurance proof and Richard Bass talked to Mary Burtnett personally regarding this telling her she had to have some- thing to us by no later than Friday, all groups using facilities required to furnish insurance. Larry Thomas made a motion that we attempt to contact her and leave message that it is absolutely necessary and a continued policy that they provice proof of insurance by 5:00 Friday , May 20 or they will have to cease using the fields. Charlie Langham seconded and motion carried unanimously The summer tennis program was discussed and Carl Self had offered to teach the clinic that had been budgeted. Discussion led to a motion by Charlie Smith for him to charge $15.00 a month or $25.00 for the two months, June - July the program will be run. Charlie Langham seconded and motion carried unanimously. Eddie reported there will be a soccer camp the 3rd week in June & 2nd week in July. Also that summer day camp notices posted, response not good yet but expects more when school out. A report was given on the Boys & Girls Club request, the City will be con- tracting with them. All though good idea. The Power Classic Golf Scramble will be held this weekend to raise money for the high school. Eddie reported that senior baseball there again this year. They have already given a $500.00 donation and proof of insurance. Bob Bishop had made a request to allow to scrimmage at the field one time a week for the Jamboree that is scheduled for the 27th. Charlie Smith moved to grant permission for this. Charlie Langham seconded and motion carried unanimously. The asphalt at the stadium inside is in bad condition. Eddie was asked to get cost on repairing this. The meeting date was moved to June 22nd next month. The trouble at the basketball goals was discussed with the bad language, etc. We are going to take a look and see attitude at this time, if further trouble will have to do something. There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
