Under old business, Larry reported that the computer discussed at the last meeting could be donated to the Recreation Department as early as next week. The banners put at the playing field were discussed and Phil said we need to add 12" pipe or the fence will fall over. Stanley asked how much this would cost. Phil said possibly $400-500. Stanley Fant moved to approve getting this fence if it does not run over $500. Larry Thomas seconded and motion carried unanimously. Eddie reported that the batting cage is almost finished, looking good. Bob asked about securing the net in the center. Eddie said he will do that. Eddie mentioned how good the fields are looking. Larry said that he had gotten complaints about Stimpson and he went over and looked and it does not look as good as he thinks it could. Eddie reported that Mr. Cooper had been out and repaired all the fence. He said he had a meeting with Vann Saltz and Tony Caminiti and they are working together on this. Richard mentioned the memo the board had gotten from Mayor Nix asking why the Little League Football could not use the stadium. The board discusse what had happened when they came up and Richard said he would answer the memo as requested. Mike Ford mentioned the letter from ADECA regarding the Y using the park lands. He mentioned that this will probably take care of itself. Eddie discussed with the board several things he had put on his agenda: The Mobile Vipers - He told of the visit he had from the owner and that there was no way we could possibly do what he asked. He was asked to come to the meeting, but, the consensus was we would not be able to put them in Fairhop . He reported that we have new scoreboards coming in for the high school field and the Peanut/minor league field. He was asked about the NAIA Socce tournament and said he had talked to them but they never called him back. Possibly their bid was not the one selected. He had asked Bo Bishop, the new high school coach, to come tonight but them was a tournament scheduled and he felt he ought to be there. Everyone is real pleased with him, thinks he will be an asset. Nancy Hall came in at this time and asked to use the area out by the pool for the Corn Festival again this year on July 2. Said that they just wished to do what they did last year, keep it small, family oriented, no rides. Approval was given and she is to get with Phil on what she needs. The running of the swimming pool was discussed. Eddie had given out an outline(in file) setting out fees and dates it will be open next year. Bob aske if there was any problem with staying open thru September. There was not. Eddie said he had talked to the swim association on several occasions and the did not seem to mind us running it. It was asked if we wished to charge them a fee - we do not. No decision has been made on running the concession stand. Eddie brought up that there has been discussion about building 4 girls softball fields and 2 new soccer fields at the high school. This would be a good idea since we definitely need these the way the program is growing, and it would solve a problem for us that we would not have to buy the land. Bob asked how we would handle conflicting schedules, who would negotiate the ins/outs of this, for instance the band using when it might be scheduled for one of our programs. It was mentioned that they are supposed to be laying out a field for the band at the high school too. Eddie had a copy of Daphne's agreement with the Daphne high school and it was discussed. The City would build the fields, Phil asked how could we possibly handle anything else with what we have now taking all our time. It was agreed we would need more help. Richard asked how all felt and it was a consensus that we move forward with this plan. Eddie also presented a growth chart that showed the growth in all the programs. It showed each facility and the use it is getting with each program and the growth for the last 3 years, which all 3 had. There was no doubt that more facilities would be much utilized. It was agreed we needed to get figures on what these new fields would cost. The possibility of getting funds from ADECA was discussed also. Bob Callahan mentioned that he thought it would be a good thing for the city to sponsor a Leon Lett day. Discussion was held on best way to do this. Betty offered that Rene Mashburn was trying to put something together and Larry and Bob said they would get with her and see what they could offer Eddie mentioned all the events coming up this Saturday and invited all to come out to the parks. There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
