HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-19-1994 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, January 19, 1994 at 6:30 p.m. at the City Administration Building, 161 N. Section Street Present: Chairman Richard Bass, members Stanley Fant, Rae Jackson, Charlie Langham, Bob Callahan, Larry Thomas; Phil Rutherford Facilities Director, Eddie Boyett, Recreation Director=, Mike Ford, Council Liaison and Betty Rivenbark, Secretary The minutes were approved as written on motion by Stanley Fant, seconded by Charlie Langham and unanimously carried. The bills were approved on motion by Stanley Fant, seconded by Charlie Langham and carried with Larry Thomas abstaining. Mary Burtnett of the Girls Softball Assoc. was present tonight to talk with the board. She told of their new officers - Mary Burtnett, President; Secretary, Susan Williamson; Treasurer, Teri Huntington. She said they will hold their signups Feb 5 and 12 and tryouts on the 19 and 26. She asked about using Stimpson Field for the tryouts. She asked what their responsibilities would be on the field now. Eddie introduced himself and said that he had tried to get in touch with her but she had not called him back, that he wished to come to their meeting and talk to them. She said they wished to have a meeting without him being there first and then he could come. Eddie said that we can work things out but we don't anticipate any changes. She said they will begin their program the Ist weekend in May. Mary thanked the board and said to let them know what they needed from them. After she left Stanley said he thought that the youth associations using the city facilities should furnish a end of year financial statement to Eddie/boar. Bob Callahan said he thought Eddie should also serve as at least an ex-offic o member on the different boards. Richard said Eddie should be receiving all the information from all the associations on scheduling to help coordinate activities. Eddie reported that the batting cage should be finished by today except the pads. Charlie said he is working on getting some. The computer for Eddie was discussed and there were no bids brought to City Hall. Larry said that possibly the Centennial Committee will have one available within 60 days. The signs on the baseball field were talked about. They have sold 42-43 out of 80 but not all have been paid for yet. Eddie re- ported he has received 15 replies on the tennis program, going slow right now but he is still getting information out. He reported he is going to conference next Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and he will get information on the youth coach certification. He said no one has been using the track because the weather has been so bad. That everything is going okey as far as Senior Bowl practice. Charlie asked if we did not wish to get some picnic tables from the high school that they are building. He said they would be $60 apiece. Further discussion led to a motion by Larry Thomas to purchase 10 tables, motion seconded by Bob Callahan and unanimously carried. Eddie then related to the board all the things he had to talk about: He said he had a request from N.A.I.A. Soccer Assoc. to use the stadium November 21-26, 1994. The Board discussed this at length. They said if we do have them we want to get, concessions, parking and rent. They also discussed offering this as primary site and wished Eddie to pursue this. Stanley Fant made a motion to have Eddie negotiate and see if we can host this Championship. Charlie Langham seconded and motion carried unanimous) . The Arts & Crafts programs were discussed. Eddie gave a report on how much money we received and how much we spent, with an overage of $442.37. He talked about paying the teachers vs. volunteers. Rae related the events as they had happened before and that she did not get the support she expected when she held her May Day celebration. It seemed they were only interested in working for pay. It was suggested that Eddie come up with a plan for Arts & Crafts. Eddie said he is shooting for a Easter Arts & Crafts program. Rae said she and Eddie should get together later. The swimming pool was discussed and Eddie related he had talked to Delys Quinley. It is his opinion that we can run it just as well as the swim association. Further discussion led to Charlie Langham making a motion to let the city run the pool this year. Stanley Fant seconded and motion carried unanimously. Eddie reported on the basketball clinic. He said it went okey, just did not have the participation they had hoped for. He also told of the Jill Hall race coming up January 29th, and the baseball clinic that Rick Davis is planning to put on. Stimpson Field was discussed again and the decision was made to let the girls run the program as before and allow them to hold tryouts the 19th and 26th. There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
