HomeMy WebLinkAbout12-08-1993 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, December 8, 1993 at 6:30 p.m. at the City Administration Building, 161 N. Section St. Present: Chairman Richard Bass; members Rae Jackson, Charlie Langham Larry Thomas, Bob Callahan, Stanley Fant . Phil Rutherford, Gen. Supt.,Betty Rivenbark, Secretary, Mike Ford.and Eddie Boyett The minutes of the November meeting were presented and approved as written on motion by Charlie Langham, seconded by Larry Thomas and unanimously carried. The bills were approved as presented with the exception of Tut Wynne's that is still being carried over pending receipt of a letter he promised to write. Motion by Charlie Langham, seconded by Rae Jackson and unanimousl, carried. Under old business the Board discussed the Adult Tennis League program that Rick Cleveland had proposed to put on. We had asked for a specific proposal and had that information tonight. Discussion was held on this with questions being asked if we were going to leave one court open. Eddie said surely, that his main goal was to get the program going again. That he is not up here promoting Rick Cleveland. Richard said Rick had called him and that they are putting out flyers and getting public input as to what kind of programs to have. He said he was for letting him have a shot at it and see where it goes. Larry asked if we had any other requests. Eddie said no, that it is underused now. Mike Ford said he would like to have the times set and post it so there would be no misunderstanding. Eddie said that would be no problem. There will be no signed contract. Larry Thomas moved to go ahead with program as presented tonight, remembering if mishandled that we will take another look at it, and further give Eddie the authorization to deal with him and set the schedules. Stanley Fant seconded and motion carried unanimously. Charlie said he just wanted to report that he was at a meeting last night with Rick Davis and he told the baseball program that we would be receiving $2600 up front out of money made from signs and that he made a real positive thing out of it. Richard Bass reported on his telephone conversation with Mr. Strickland from ADECA and that he told him that since we had used state money on Volanta Park that we could not lease it to private group. He said Mr. Strickland is going to talk further with the Mayor . Bob Callahan asked Mike to make sure that he talked to Layton and set him straight. All agreed they had no problem with the Y coming in just them using our land. Eddie reported that the batting cage had been torn down, Mike said he plans to put this on the agenda for Monday night Stanley said he has been talking with Eddie about the fitness trail and trying to get some interest generated in it. Eddie said it has been cleaned up and ready to go. Eddie also men- tioned his involvement in - he Jill Hall memorial run; his desire to join the Alabama Recreational Parks Association. Bob Callahan asked that we allow the soccer association to sponsor this membership in the amount of $250 as they will receive direct benefits from this. Larry Thomas moved to permit membership, Charlie Langham seconded and we will accept soccer associations' offer of money. Stanley asked about the possibility of looking into a coaches clinic. Eddie said he would look into it. Eddie said he would like to open the track for walking and had a schedule of times. The board discussed it and said it would be fine but we need to monitor it to make sure it is not misused. The possibility of taking over the pool was discussed and Eddie was asking for input, he did not wish to pursue this if we did not wish him to, he was told to continue to seek infor- mation. Eddie said he is going to get involved with the Youth At Risk program which works with minorities, underprivileged kids, but has nothing to do with Rec. job. Mike wanted to check with the lease on Young Street is up. Bob mentioned that we need to get Eddie a computer, he was advised to check and see what available in Fairhope. There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
