HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-20-1993 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, October 20,
1993 at the City Administration Building 161 N. Section Street.
Present: Chairman Richard Bass; members Rae Jackson, Larry Thomas
Stanley Fant, Bob Callahan and Council liaison Mike Ford
Rick Davis, FHS Baseball Coach, came tonight to talk with the board about
the possibility of selling advertising on the high school baseball field by
putting up windscreens all along the outfield with lettering on it. He had
pictures showing how this had been done in Daphne and said he had talked
to the company and that the screens could be cut to allow for wind passage
and that he would only use one color, white for letters- and one size
only, very uniform. He said that he figures 80 signs could be sold at a
cost of $150 ea. for the 1st year and $100 a year thereafter. He figures
that possibly they could make $8,000 for the program. From this he said
he would like to help his program. Different ways to preserve the wind-
screens was talked about with the best idea being to roll them up when
the season is not in. Phil said they could reinforce the pipe by putting
a smaller size pipe in the larger pipe. Stanley said that the best thing
he could do is get his kids involved in doing things at the field and the
program, when they get involved that it means so much more to them. He
was told about trying to keep the kids out of the lower area, not drive
pass the cable put there. He thanked the board for all they have done
he said where he came from he was expected to do it all by himself.
He was told that we would discuss it further and get back with him.
After he left Rae said that she would like to think we would get part
of this money he raised to go towards what we would need for a director.
That we need to get it up front, get it earmarked. Bob said he thought
we were going to get with the different groups and communicate what we
wished to get out of each one. Richard said when he talked to Rick he
was not adverse to plan to give some money towards the fee for a director.
The minutes were approved on motion by Stanley
Fant seconded by
Rae Jackson and unanimously carried. The bills
were approved on motion
by Stanley Fant seconded by Larry Thomas with
the exception of Gulf
Shores Turf bill who we are dickering with over
some repairs they made.
Under old business Phil brought up that a decision
needs to be made on
the batting cage, that we have gotten 4 different bids from Mr. Cooper
and we still don't know what we want for sure.
Richard apologized and
said we do need to get together on the site and
decide for sure. Further
discussion was held on whether or not to have concrete floor. Bob said
he had been places where there was nothing but
a mudhole and was unusable,
he doesn't want to do it unless we do it right.
All agreed we should do it
right.
A discussion was held on the Recreation Director
position. Mike Ford told
that they had interviewed Alan Sumrall Tuesday
night and planned to interview
Eddie Boyett Thursday night.
There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
Note: Minutes were amended to show that a vote was taken after the meeting
on the selling of advertising on the high school baseball field and
it was decided to let them go forward to see what they do. Bob
Callahan was opposed to this as voted on.
