HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-29-1993 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, September 29, 1993 at 6:30 p.m. at the City Administration Building, 161 N. Section Street. Present: Chairman Richard Bass; members Stanley Fant, Charlie Langham, Rae Jackson, Bob Callahan, Charlie Smith. Phil Rutherford Facilities Director and Betty Rivenbark, Secretary This was a special called meeting at which time the board was to discuss proposed recreation budget and the recreation director position. Chuck Gravat was recognized as spokesman for a group that were present tonight to ask that the high school be allowed to use the football stadium to practice in. Chuck said that 117 athletes are trying to dress out in the field house at the middle school and they have a tremendous problem. That they would like to use the field Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and would not use in inclement weather. That we only have 5 games left, 18 practice days. They wanted to bring this to our attention and seek our help. That it is costing the school $20.00 to bus the students somewhere else. The board asked Phil when Robert fixes the fields. It was determined,that there was no more junior varsity games and that the field would be used 2 more Thursday nights. Stanley asked if they had looked at the new area. Bob said that there is water standing there and loose turf that he does not think this area would work. Charlie Smith said he sure would like to see us help them. Soccer is using the other areas every day with their program. Further discussi led to them saying they would use the stadium as well as the dressing rooms. The group was thanked for coming and told that we would consider their request. Two representatives from Eastern Shore Youth Football, Tim Crabtree and another, were present to talk to the board about using the stadium when they have scheduled their games in Fairhope. Tim said that there are only 3 games here with 80 kids in the program. He said they would use it from 8:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. on Saturdays, they have 5 games and they only last 1 hourLeach. That they have 9-10 yr. old team and 11-12 yr. old team. Charlie mentioned that he had told Vaughn Kelly in June to bring this infor- mation to the board for their consideration. Tim was told that they need to have insurance to cover the league and that we would need to see proof of this before we give permission for them to use our field. Tim said he knows that they have to have insurance invidually but he did not know if they require copies. They were told it would have to be their responsib'tGtjto clean up. They were further told that when they presented proof of insurance they could use the stadium. Note: The decision to let them use stadium was made after they left -and Charlie Langham said he would call them, but, they would need to•' present proof of insurance before use and the 23rd date they had re- quested was not available due to board giving permission to Middle School to use it. A motion was made later by Stanley Fant for them to use field 2 times, Oct. 2 and 11/13 if proof of insurance provided. Charlie Smith 2nd. The budget was discussed and Richard told the board he had talked to Richard Dunning and there was a copy provided for each board member of the propsed new budget. After discussion of this Stanley Fant moved to adopt budget as proposed Rae Jackson seconded and motion carried unanimously. (copy in file) The agreement between the Fairhope High School and the board was discussed and a motion was made by Stanley Fant to sign agreement with the school at 7 games @ 300.00 or $2100.00 for the year. Charlie Langham seconded and motion carried unanimously. (copy in file) >n Richard reported on the phone calls he had made following up on the interviews for Recreation Director and that the ones on Alan Sumrall had been very com- plimentary it was reported that he was well respected in the community, diligent, bright, go-getter, good supervisor and hard working. Further discussion led to consensus to go with the 3 chosen with Mr. Sumrall being first choice. Richard Bass said he would pass this on to the Mayor with a request of salary at $26,500.00. The high school situation was discussed again, the -pros and cons were discussi It was decided to let them use it on a one time basis, but, the Boosters would have to start mowing the Middle School field as this is going to put more work on us. Charlis Smith moved to give them permission, Bob Callahan seconded that they could practice Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, walk through some- where else for this year only. There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
