HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-15-1993 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Tuesday, June 15, 1993
at 6:30 p.m. at the City Administration Building, 161 N. Section Street.
Present: Chairman Richard Bass; members Larry Thomas, Rae Jackson,
Bob Callahan, Charlie Langham, Stanley Fant. Secretary
Betty Rivenbark and Facilities Director Phil Rutherford
The Board heard from Larry Thomas and Charlie Langham regarding their
discussion with Mayor Nix on hiring a Recreation Director. Larry said the
mayor indicated that the city would be responsible for funding a director
for one year at a salary between $24 - $26, 000 and at the end of that time
he expects the board to have a plan to continue payment for this person.
Further discussion led to Larry saying that he sees that we have two things
to accomplish here, 1. sit down and develop a job description for this position,
and 2. meet with the existing heads of the association after this developed.
To accomplish this we first need to have a work meeting. After everyone
consulted their calendars it was decided that July 1 at 6:30 p.m. was a
good date and time to meet. The secretary, in the mean time is to solicit
information from Foley and Gulf Shores to compare with what we already
have available to us. Then we will have to advertise for this position,
talk to applicants, come up with 3 names to present to the council and
they will make final determination from the 3 presented. Larry Thomas put
in the form of a motion that the city needs a Recreation Director and in order
to comply with conditions set forth by the mayor have a• work- meeting -
to formulate an acceptable and complete job description. Charlie Langham
seconded and motion carried unanimously.
The minutes were approved on motion by Stanley Fant, seconded by Larry
Thomas and unanimously carried.
A report was given that the NABA had given $800.00 to the City for use
of our fields. Discussion followed on the problems we are having with them
not craning up as they said they would. Charlie said he would contact them
and tell them that it does not matter who plays last, the agreement was they
would leave it as they found it. Richard said to give them a little more time
and if problem continues them they will not be able to use it. Bob at this time
told of groups he had run off of the fields that are just showing up that
are not scheduled or in any Fairhope leagues. This to be monitored to see
what we can do about it.
The bills were approved on motion by Charlie Langham, seconded by Rae
Jackson and unanimously carried.
Under old business the board discussed the painting going on at Volanta and
the upcoming Dixie Youth tournaments. Phil reported everything done on the
lists he had received and Mr. Cooper is working on repairing the fence.
Phil reported on the problems he is having with the pool. Same ones we had
last year and how is trying to keep everything out there going on an even keel
It was decided to ask Rick Navarro to come to next meeting.
Bob handed out information on the soccer program for next year and the fees
that will be charged. He told that they board had voted to not have parochial
school teams and that he is a very unpopular person now but that they were
not fair to the other teams. He anticipates the numbers will drop but that
will not be too bad. He said the Roy Patton camp will be held again in August
The board also talked about the handicap ramps and seating that we are going
to have to install before football season and Phil was asked to get some figures
on redoing the asphalt walkways while he is working on this.
There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
Next regular meeting to be 3rd Wednesday night in July at 6:30 p.m.
