HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-17-1992 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Thursday, September 17, 1992 at 6:00 P.M. at the City Administration Building, 161 N. Section Street Present: Chairman Richard Bass; members Charlie Langham, Rae Jackson, Larry Thomas. Mike Ford Council liason, Phil Rutherford, Facilities Director and Betty Rivenbark, Secretary The board recognized a group of parents that were present representing the Fairhope youth football assoc. Steve Sloan spoke for the group saying that they used to play with a league in Bay Minette but they wished to form their own league and play here in Fairhope. They had 2 teams- 60 kids - one with 9-10 year olds and one with 11-12 year olds. They will be playing teams from Daphne and Bay Minette. All games will be on Saturday and they won't be needing lights to play. They are here tonight looking for a field to play on. He asked about possibly using the stadium. The board listened to their request and them told them they would discuss it and call them about what was decided. Meredith Portman and Katie Leblanc were also present. Meredith had a proposal to present to the board for putting on a fall drama program. She had presented a typewritten proposal and said she- was open to suggestions as to ways to cut costs(her proposal was for $800-in file) . She said she would like to have no more than 15 kids and would be for 2 weeks with the performance being on the weekend like she did during the summer program. Rae asked her questions about how she had done it in the schools and what response she got from the Arts Resource Team. ( Arts Resource may be able to help with people but did not have funds) They said that they thought about $200 left over from summer program. They were thanked for all the work they did and told we would discuss it and let them know. The minutes were approved as written on motion by Larry Thomas, seconded by Charlie Langham and unanimously approved. The bills were approved for payment on motion by Larry Thomas, seconded by Charlie Langham and unanimously carried. The new building was asked about and Phil said that they had put the doors on today and were finished. The reworking of the high school baseball field was discussed and Larry mentioned we ought to look into getting some canvas to cover the field. The board discussed the request from the high school and Richard said he would write him a letter setting out the ways we already contribute but cannot commit to any funds for new high school. Larry Thomas mentioned he was out at Stimpson on opening day of Soccer and all the compliments he had gotten about work recreation department and board does. Under new business, the board discussed the request from the youth football league and came up with them using the high school football field. Larry said he would talk to Andy Schottgen and we commited to cutting grass and lining field. They are to furnish schedules and clean up after games. The art proposal was discussed and after much discussion the board voted on motion by Rae Jackson to have 20 children, charge $20 per child and have it if she can do with $300.00 allocated. Larry Thomas seconded and motion carried unanimously. Mike Ford discussed with the board a request he had from Jim Reid for some basketball goals. Much discussion was held and all agreed that every basket- ball goal we have ever put out, or those put out by local churches, has been destroyed. It was concensus of board to have them inside and have supervise The budget was discussed and was adopted with minor changes(in file) . A motion was made to adopt amended budget by Larry Thomas, seconded by Charlie Langham and unanimously carried. Phil mentioned that we are going to have to repair leak in skimmers at pool before to open next year. Senior are still swimming and everything okey. The board questioned dance radio station had and asked for explanation of use of funds since we were not involved in it but they advertised with our name associated with it. There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
