at 6:00 p.m. at the City Municipal Complex, 161 N. Section Street
Present: Chairman Richard Bass, members Stanley Fant, Rae Jackson,
Larry Thomas, Charlie Langham. Phil Rutherford, Facilities
Director and Betty Rivenbark, Secretary
Richard recognized Rick Cleveland, FHS coach, Jim Brazeal and Wayne Tait
who were here representing the high school. Coach Cleveland said with the
new school facility the only thing that the county will give money on is to
build a gym; that the county provides nothing for athletics. He said they
re trying to raise $250,000 for the new facility. That they are coming to-
night just to let us know what they are facing but they are also asking if
here is anything we can do to help them. They went on to say they are
doing a number of of fundraisers, speaking to different civic organizations,
and trying to get the message to the community. Jim Brazeal said that the
Boosters Club is 100% behind the school on this and have to committed to see
his project completed. They said the facility would house different meeting
rooms, weight room, restrooms, locker rooms and would benefit the whole
community. Richard told them that we are anxious to help and will in the
ay we can but we, too, are limited in our funds. Stanley asked what type
f building and Rick said they are trying for concrete building, they had
gotten a price of $40,000 for metal building but not what they want. It
as pointed out that Foley and Daphne both have metal buildings now. The
uestion of a bond issue was raised they were told to come back here if
they wished to pursue this.
Thorn Thomas was present to report on the soccer camp and planned fall
schedule. He said they had 36 teams, a new league this year under six,
nd a youth 16 league. He said their biggest problem was where to practice.
e asked if they could use Stimpson for the upper age group only. The
oard responded he could and he was also told to look at the land behind
he new water tower and across the street from the old elementary school.
e said these would be fine but they would have to have the grass cut.
hil said he would do that.
Katie LeBlanc and Meredith Portman were here to report on the art & drama
rogram they put on the first week in August. Katie reported they had 160
hildren with 22 in the drama portion. That the program ran from 9-12. She
aid she sent questionaires at the end of the program and that the favorite
�hing was pottery. She said she believed that 8th graders were too -old for
he program, they got bored easily. She also said that she would be interested
n doing it again next year. Meredity said she wrote the play, cast the players
nd then had the others do the backdrops for the performance. That all went
ell with her group too. She was suggesting maybe doing this more than once
year, that there was an interest expressed in doing more. She was told to
ork something up and get with Rae on it. The board was very appreciative
if their efforts and the program.
The minutes were approved as written on motion by Charlie Langham and
econded by Charlie Langham. The bills were approved on motion by Stanley
ant, seconded by Rae Jackson.
hil discussed with the board that Stimpson was in need of painting. He --asked
f they wanted Robert to do it or hire someone. He told them that Sandell was
eing paid $8.00 an hour to do painting for the city now. With all that Robert
s trying to do he is getting behind in other things that need doing so Phil
s to get a price from Sandell and call.
The request from the seniors to use the pool was discussed. It was decided to
Ilow use 5 days a week, 9-12, until November. This is to be conveyed by
etter(letter in file) . A motion was made by Charlie Langham, seconded by Larry
Thomas to okey this.
hil reported on progress of the slab, that they were trying to get the ticket
ooths and stadium ready. The board talked about getting a price from Ron
ellitier on fixing the high school field. Mike Ford was not here to report on
creage available.
