HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-18-1991 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, September 18, 1991, at 6:00 p.m. at the City Administration Building, 161 N. Section St. Present: Charlie Langham, Rae Jackson, Larry Thomas, Stanley Fant. Facilities Director Phil Rutherford and Secretary Betty Rivenbark Art Thomas spoke to the Board saying he represented a group interested in helping to get a youth center. He reported the results of a survey they had sent out at the Middle, High, and Organic schools in the area. He said they had over 420 responses and basically they had asked what they would like to see offered for youth. He said two of the main things were a club of some sort and sports activity. They had asked for batting cages, which we have and are available to the public but they might not be aware of it, that possibly we could provide a volleyball area for them at the beach, they said there is no place to skateboard, no carpet golf, they would like an arcade. The way that the recreation programs are run was explained to them, that we provide facilities and the programs are run by the parents. Perhaps someone in the private sector could start an arcade. Different ideas were discussed, it was noted that the recreation board was not in a position to provide a facility. Phil said we could possibly provide stanchions for a volleyball court maybe at the beach but we could not provide the net and ball. Further discussion led to Mr. Thomas saying they are early and pre liminary,. discussions are being held only, but they are working on it and hope they can work with the Rec. Bd. The Board assured them they will help them as we can. Phil reported under old business that he had found a sandspreader for less than 5,000. The Board wished to ask the council if they would give us the money out of the improvement fund. Rae reported on the summer arts program, that they had 150 kids as well as a play and all had an excellent time. The minutes were approved as written on motion by Larry Thomas, Stanley Fant seconded and motion carried unanimously. The bills were approved on motion by Rae Jackson, seconded by Larry Thomas and unanimously carried. The stadium contract for the year was considered and Larry Thomas made a motion to charge $300.00 per game for the year(7 home games) for a total of $2,100.00. This included J.V. and Jr. High games. Mike Ford reported to the board that Jim Reid had asked him to talk to them about starting a program at Fort Reil Armory where problem students would be tutored for an hour and then be able to play basketball. Mike had talked to the Mayor and he had said the city could handle the electricity, we would need to strip the floors and install 2 goals. The Rec. Bd. said they could install the 2 goals. Possibly get the men from the civic center to go and strip the floors. All willing to help and see this get started. The board approved the purchase of 2 basketball goals to help with getting the program going. Larry Thomas reported on talking to the City of Daphne about the Recreation Director position and payment of same, that he had 5 people working under th and the budget they worked with. At this time we had 2 people come and ask about the senior adults using the pool for another month. They were told that the pool had been shut down sin Labor Day and that it would take at least $1000 to get it started again, that they need to come back and talk to us in April of next year. The budget will be discussed at the next meeting. There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
