Section Street Present: Chairman Richard Bass; members Rae Jackson, Larry Thomas Charlie Langham. Phil Rutherford, Facilities Director, Betty Rivenbark, Mike Ford were also present Chairman Bass recognized Rock Searle who was present tonight requesting to use space at Volanta Park for a Frisbee contest that he wished to put on July 13(July 14 would be rain date). The Board asked him how much room he needed and he said 100 yds long 50 yds wide. He said he knew of an open area behind the swimming pool and if okey he would like to use that. That it would last 4-5 hours and would be free to the children. No one saw a problem with what he is proposing or him having it at the field. Phil asked him if he thought about having it at the field at Faulkner. He said that would not be a problem either. Phil told him we could line it off if he wanted us to. When he left he said he was going to go out and look at place at Volanta. At this time the group from the Swim Association, Alletta Jackson, Wayne Hill, John Bartels and Rob Stankowski addressed board regarding a letter they had received about some problems at the pool from Dalys Quinley. Ms. Jackson said that the day that the letter was written there was a problem with kids from the day care with not enough life guards, the deep end was closed because of a chemical problem and the music most probably was too loud, Since that time, there are at least 4 life guards on duty all day, the day cares bring their own life guards when they come, the water has been straightened out and the music has been toned down. She said further that she sees Ms. Quinley at swim team practice and she has not acted like any- thing was wrong. She told the board that Rob is the pool manager. She stated that the only difference at the pool this year is the open swim time is from 1-4 Mon - Fri. but really it is open more as open Sunday 1-9, Monday and Wed night 6-9 and Saturday 12-9. She was aked how many people in the swim team and she said 139. They have 4 swimming classes a day with 30 kids in ea. class. She said that now they have 3 day cares coming from Daphne a week, that they do bring there own lifeguards and they pay the regular fee. She said truly that half of their income comes from outside of Fairhope. After all questions were answered satisfactorily, the Board thanked the swim association for coming, told them what a wonderful job they are doing and keep up the good work. Rae expressed to the board her dismay that Daphne is bringing so many people down here with the money and programs that they have. While we were on this Phil mentioned to the Board that he knew of at least 2 teams from Daphne playing at our softball fields for the season. The Board asked him if they were playing Fairhope teams and he said teams from all over. Richard said he would get with Linda and see what is going on. The minutes were approved as written on motion by Larry Thomas, seconded by Charlie Langham and unanimously carried. The bills were approved for payment as presented on motion by Larry Thomas seconded by Rae Jackson and unanimously carried. Under old business it was reported that the new lawnmower is in. Charlie asked Phil to check it because it is cutting unlevel. Richard reported that the tennis clinic was a success, over 50 kids showed up.l That Rick signed up at least 50 kids that day. Richard also reported on the soccer playing. He said that they played one game on the football field but then moved it to the top as one of the games up there was cancelled. That he did see some damage to the field and was afraid if they continued to use the field that there would be permanent damage. In any event Mark had decided that they would not use the football field again. The clinic did not make so that gave them some room up top, as well as he did not want the hassle as he heard that 300 parents were coming to the Rec Bd to protest his using the football field. Charlie said he would like us to take each facility and name policies for each and then stick by them. He suggested everyone be thinking for next meeting. The question of the football team using the football field to practice was raised. Phil said in the past they were allowed 1 night a week to practice on it. Under new business, Phil showed the board a sod cutter @ 2100.00 and top dre ser at 5500.00 he wished to get. Mike said he would present this to council to be purchased out of the Improvement Account. Larry Thomas moved, Charlie Langham seconded moving to request from council this be purchased for the recreation department. Motion carried unanimously. The building to put the equipment in was also discussed. It is a big priority with the new equipment we are getting. Larry said he will check some figures on one. There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
