HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-15-1991 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met Wednesday, May 15, 1991
at the City Administration Building, 161 N. Section Street at 6:00 p.m.
Present: Chairman Al Johnson, members Rae Jackson, Larry Thomas,
Charlie Langham, Richard Bass. Betty Rivenbark, Secretary
and Phil Rutherford, Facilities Director were also present.
Mark Johnson and Jeff Dexter were present tonight to tell the board how
they wished to put on a soccer clinic and seven -a -side league. They said
that the clinic would run from June 8 thru July 27 and be for ages 8-12 yrs.
of age every Saturday from 8:00 A.M.-10:00 A.M. The seven -a -side league
would be for incoming freshmen thru graduating high school seniors and
they would play between June 8 - July 27. All they are asking of the city
is to have a place to play, preferably at Volanta park. They want to hold
the clinic at the top of the hill or in the pit area and they said the goals
are already there. Mark said he would really like to use the stadium for
the seven -a -side games. Rae asked if Fairhope children would be given first
choice in registering, she was reassured that even though it would be open to
all children in the area more than likely mothers would not make a special
trip to Fairhope if they did not live close by, especially from 8-10 in the morn
Jeff told the board that he wanted to assure them that he had done many of
these clinics before and that they would not just be babysitting, that they
had a definite plan to teach the children and ideally he would want 2 people
per ball, and there would be one on one instruction. The board thanked them
for their presentation and told them they would get back with them after talk-
ing among themselves.
The minutes were approved as written on motion by Richard Bass and second
by Charlie Langham. The bills were approved on motion by Larry Thomas
seconded by Richard Bass and unanimously carried.
Under old business, the board discussed what had been found out regarding
the diving boards. Phil reported he had found that all faclities he had check
with used 2" pipe, that it was standard. It was reported that the swim assoc
iation had written for some standards regarding pools but had not reported
back that they had received them. It was further reported that the swim
association was planning to put grip tape on the railings and steps. It was
agreed that a letter should be forwarded to Ms. Childress informing her
that the only additional precaution that we see that is needed is for the grip
tape to be added and that is being done..
The batting cage was brought up again and Al said he would like to put it
on "hold" right now, that he has an idea and maybe we can work something
ng.
Phil reported that he had ordered the tractor and that the mayor had told him
that he did not wish to go with lease purchase that we had the money in Impr ve-
ment account and that he wanted to pay for it.
Larry Thomas reported that the soccer board had a meeting and that they had
their schedule for next year. That a soccer camp was scheduled for August 5-
Charlie brought up the need for a bigger and better place to store recreation
board equipment. Phil told them how much it had cost to build a building
at the warehouse, no decision was made, all were going to think about it.
The soccer clinic was discussed again, Richard Bass said he saw no problem
with what they are proposing, just where it might be conducted, that the two
outside areas are great. Charlie said he is opposed to them using the stadium.
Al said that they would be using them on Saturday only, not interfering with
anything during the week, that it would be limited use and they would not use
it in bad weather. Further discussion led to Larry Thomas making a motion to
give them permission to use the stadium for seven a league and fields for the
clinic with the stipulation that they not use the stadium when it is bad weather.
Richard Bass said he would second if when they advertised they did not say
Fairhope stadium but Fairhope Municipal Complex. Motion carried with Larry
and Richard voting for motion, Charlie voted no and Rae abstained. Larry
said that they would be expected to open and close and keep restroom facilitie
clean, like they found it, with no expense to the city and if we determine stad um
is being damaged by too much use they will have to quit using it.
There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
