HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-12-1999 Regular MeetingThe Airport Board of the City of Fairhope met Monday, 12 July 1999, at 8:00 A.M. at the City Administration Building, 161 North Section Street. Present: Chairman Sue Mason; members Robert Colling, Andy Huggins, William Payne, and Geniece W. Johnson Acting Secretary. The minutes of the 10 May 1999, were duly approved as written. Ms. Dorothy Yeager introduced Mr. William Krawchuck. Mr. Krawchuck addressed the Board with an informal proposal to establish a Military Academy with a Naval Aviation Theme, adjacent to the Municipal Airport. Mr. Krawchuck pointed out the following details of the Academy: • Funding for this school is in place, budgeted Ten Million • Secondary School • Cost to attend, approximately $20,000 each year • Need 33 acres for the facilities - State recommends 33 acres • Male school only - does not exclude females • No religion school, but will be available • English will be taught as a second language • Subject - Math, Science, History, and English four (4) years each Mr. Krawchuck expressed that he was looking to keep the entire facility located together. Sue stated that the east side of the Airport would not offer enough land with direct access to a hanger built on land leased from Fairhope Airport Board. However, the west side offers enough land, certain utilities are available, and could potentially offer access to a hanger. Mr. Krawchuck indicated that the academy would want a very long lease. It was stressed that the academy would have to contend with airport noise. Mr. Krawchuck expressed that the airport noise would not be a problem. Sue reported on the bids for the Airport roof repairs (rear buildings) LRW, Inc., Flomaton, Alabama $42,183.00 Thomas Roofing Co., Mobile, Alabama $66,975.00 It is the recommendation of the Purchasing Agent Wayne Smith and General Superintendence Phil Rutherford to accept the low bid of LRW, Inc. with all specifications being met. The bid will go before the City Council tonight. Sue reported that Clark Aviation is in arrears and their balloon payment will be due in August 1999. Sue Mason and City Attorney Marion E. Wynne are prepared to take further action. Teledyne has not submitted an amendment extending their lease, but the Board is in favor of continuing their lease. There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned at 8:57 a.m.
