HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-17-1989 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met May 17, 1989 at the City Administration Building, 161 N. Section Street, Fairhope, Al. Present: Chairman Barney Shull, Members Don Smith, Al Johnson Stanley Fant. Phil Rutherford, Facilities Director and Betty Rivenbark, Secretary The minutes of the March 15th meeting were approved as recorded. Barney brought to the Board's attention the new director at the Adult Recreation Center, and that as he had talked to everyone, that the City was going to take over the program and run it. All agreed this was a good idea. Under of-d business the Young Street program was talked about and Phil reported that it looked like nothing had been done out there but that we are getting calls all the time to come out there and do something. Phil reported that Vandy had been out there at least 4 times to try to fix the roof from stop leaking. Further discussion led to a motion by Stanley to try and lease the park back to original group for $1.00 a year with a five year renewable contract. Al Johnson seconded and motion carried unanimously. The swimming pool was discussed, with Phil reporting that they have a bad leak there and that the whole roof is going to have to be replaced. That he had been getting prices and that the cheapest so far is $5,000.00. Phil told them that he thinks he can replace the outer rotting parts and that will take care of the problem. Barney asked about what it would look like when finished and Phil replied A -frame. Ali agreed that they did not want anything that would not look right and Barney said he would like to suggest something, Phil said that if he would come up with a design that we would use it. Don asked if what Phil is proposing would last. He said yes, that it would take care of the problem, and last. Where we would get the money was discussed and a motion was made by Al Johnson to ask Barney to approach the Council about transfering enough money to cover having the roof repaired. Stanley Fant seconded and motion passed unanimously. Phil reported the incident at the ball park with the young boy getting hit by a ball that was hit by some high school boys practicing. Barney brought up for discussion and thought the possibility of the Rec. Board sponsoring two fund raising days(one in the spring and one in the fall) and ask the different people in the programs to help, pattern along the lines of the sausage festival and earmark the funds to help the different programs. All said they would think about it, that it sounded like a good idea. The problem we are having now is no one involved in the programs wants to help, they want the City to take care of all the facilities without participation. Phil reported futher that a lot of repair and work has been done to get the facilities back in shape. Don Smith moved to pay the bills as presented, Stanley Fant seconded and motion carried unanimously. (To include bonus for Phil $300.00) There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned. There was no meeting held in June 1989
