HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-15-1989 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Department of the City of Fairhope met March 15, 1989
at the City Administration Building, 161 N. Section Street, at 7:30 p.m.
Present: Chairman, Barney Shull, members Don Smith, Stanley Fant
Rae Jackson , Betty Rivenbark, and Phil Rutherford.
The minutes of the February 20th meeting were approved as written.
Roy Parker was present from Young Street. He said he has signed
two softball teams and had a good crowd last Sunday for a fund
raiser. He asked if we couldn't do something to the field that
it is really unplayable. He asked about the possibility of getting
a grant. He is to get back with names to followup on.
Stanley reported under old business that the fields at Volanta are
in pitiful condition. that one is sandy, one is hard as a rock and
they really need some work, need discing.
Barney brought up about Mr. Lindsey dying and that Mrs. Palumbo
was going to stay on trying to run things until we get someone.
It was thought that running an ad might generate some interest.
Don wanted to know if they might could form an organization
among themselves and run it. Approach them with that idea.
Rae asked about the possibility of having T-shirts printed with the
City logo and putting them up for sale as a money raiser for the
recreation board. All thought it was a good idea.
Don questioned the large amount of workmen's comp insurance paid
last month. It was well over $3,000 and we had only budgeted $900.
This to be checked on.
Don also brought up that he had received a letter from Harry and
he had asked him to inquire about Harry get a percentage of sales
from the Pro Shop. Barney said he had also talked to Harry and
explained that this was so, but only if there was a profit made and
there was not a profit made when Harry was there.
Barney said he would check into the Adult Tourist Center for us.
Don brought up the terrible condition that our facilities are getting
into, that we don't have money even to buy fertilizer to put on the
fields, that we are in a position that we can't even maintain the
facilities we have and they are only going to continue to go down.
That we need to approach the Mayor and Council and request
help in getting our facilities back into shape. It was thought that
we ought to make a list of things that need doing and present to
the Council. At this time Don suggested and moved that due to
the financial condition of the Recreation Dept that the position of
Programs Director be abolished. The secretary to write a letter.
The swim association was supposed to be present tonight to discuss
projects at the pool, no one came.
The bills were approved for payment as money came available.
There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
There was no meeting held in April 1989
