HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-15-1989 Regular MeetingThe Recreation Board of the City of Fairhope met February 15, 1989 at 7:30 p.m. at the City Administration Building, 161 N. Section St. Fairhope, Al. Present: Chairman, Barney Shull; members Don Smith, Stanley Fant Rae Jackson. Phil RUtherford, Facilities Director and Betty Rivenbark, Secretary The minutes of the January 18th meeting stand approved as recorded. Bill Fleming and Steve Sims were present representing the Fairhope High School Band. A discussion was held on the Fairhope High School Band hosting a band competition the first weekend in October. Bill and Steve explained to the Board what all is involved in having one of these. After all explanations made a motion was made by Don Smith to allow the band to host the band competion, for the first weekend in October, at the football field, with the provision that the band will clean-up and they will pay the hourly wages of the City employees for opening and closing. Stanley Fant seconded and motion carried unanimously. Stanley asked how the soccer game went at the stadium. Phil replied that it didn't happen. For some reason they dediced not to play there. Roy was present from Young Street to ask the Board if they would consider putting lights at the Young Street park. He said he is signing up kids for programs. Barney asked Phil what it would take and he said at least 1,500 to do the basketball courts and 7,000 on the baseball fields. That they had not been fooled with in 4-5 years and would just about all have to be replaced. The Board explained that we are strapped for money right now. That there are at least two fields at Volanta Field that they are using that do not have lights, having to use in the daylight hours. That they truly can't see re- lighting these fields at this time. Barney told how we had sought and received donations from people to light the football field when it built. and the cost runs about $350 apiece for the lights. He was told it would not be done in the foreseeable future. That he needed to get a program in operation. Roy said he would make it work. Barney mentioned to the Board that Mrs. Lindsey is in a nursing home at this time. That she sent word that she hopes to get out and back running the Adult Toursit Recreation Program shortly. Phil reported on how fixing scoreboard, that the football field had not gone dormant, on the fencing at the baseball field and the stands that need replacing. He further mentioned request for birthday party at the football field. Discussion followed by the board and led to it being noted that it is not desirable to rent to individuals for birthday parties, the rate for rent would be $500.00 if so desired. The bills were approved for payment on motion by Stanley Fant, seconded by Rae Jackson and unanimously carried. There being no further business, meeting was duly adjourned.
